Many believe that entering Taiwan is just a quick passport check and then off you go. In reality, it is often small details, such as an incorrect address for accommodation or a missed customs declaration, that determine whether you walk straight into the arrival hall or get stuck at the counter.

Do Swedes Need a Visa to Enter Taiwan

Swedish citizens can typically enter Taiwan as visitors without a visa for a short stay, provided they meet the entry requirements. It is the requirements that are checked, not just the passport.

Taiwan’s authorities describe the requirements as needing to show a valid passport, a confirmed onward or return ticket, and information about your stay. The Taiwan National Immigration Agency, NIA, emphasizes that entry is subject to inspection at the border and that travelers may need to prove the purpose of their trip.

What You Need to Have Ready at Border Control

Expect to be asked questions about where you will be staying and how long you will be there. Therefore, have your booking documents and an address that can actually be found.

What is most often requested are your passport, accommodation details, and a ticket out of Taiwan. A printed copy can be helpful, but an offline saved confirmation on your mobile often works just as well if you lack internet access.

Tip: Write down the hotel address in both Chinese and English. This can save time if staff need to call or verify the information.

Immigration Cards and Digital Forms

Taiwan has, at times, used digital arrival cards and at other times paper cards, depending on the airport and updated procedures. For you as a traveler, the point is simple: be prepared for both.

If you fill in information digitally, write your name exactly as it appears on the machine-readable line of your passport. A misspelled name or swapped first names can still lead you to manual inspection.

eGate in Taiwan and Who Can Use It

eGate is Taiwan’s automated passport control that can save a lot of time, but it is not always open to all travelers on their first entry. Generally, registration is required, and you must meet conditions such as age and having a biometric passport.

If you travel frequently to Taiwan, ask about eGate registration when you pass through immigration. It does not always happen automatically, and the rules can vary between Taoyuan, Songshan, and Kaohsiung.

Health Declaration and Arrival Checks

Taiwan has historically been quick to implement health-related entry requirements, and procedures can change at short notice due to outbreaks in the region. This may involve a digital health declaration, temperature checks, or questions about recent travels.

The safest approach is to check if Taiwan CDC has active requirements for your specific route and transit. If you are transiting through an area classified as high-risk, you may face additional questions, even if you are just changing flights.

Tip: Have a plan for mobile connectivity right upon landing. If a digital health declaration is required, it will be easier if you can open the confirmation without hunting for Wi-Fi.

Customs in Taiwan and Common Issues

After the baggage claim, you will pass through customs, often with green and red channels. Taiwan has clear rules about what must be declared, especially larger quantities of alcohol and tobacco, cash over certain amounts, and goods with specific restrictions.

Food items can be sensitive. Meat products and certain agricultural goods can lead to fines if brought in without permission, even if it is just a small gift in your bag.

Denial Upon Arrival in Taiwan and How to Reduce the Risk

Denial is rarely about a single issue, but rather the overall picture. Missing onward tickets, unclear purpose, or conflicting information about accommodation are classic reasons for being stopped for a longer interview.

If you are traveling on a one-way ticket because you plan to buy onward travel later, it can become problematic. The same applies if you state tourism but lack a reasonable plan, or if you have previously overstayed your allowed time in Taiwan.

Keep your story simple and consistent. If you are asked to show more documentation, provide it directly and without arguing, and double-check that your dates match your hotel bookings and flights.

How to Get Out Faster from Taoyuan and Other Airports

If you land during peak hours, the lines can get long, especially when several long-haul flights arrive simultaneously. Sit near the aisle on the plane if you want to disembark early, and have a pen and information ready in case paper cards are distributed.

Once you are through, follow the signs for SIM cards and transport before leaving the secure zone. It is often easier to arrange connectivity and cash inside the arrival area than outside on the street.
