ETIAS 2026: The New Travel Authorization Changing Europe Trips

Europe has long been one of the world’s most open regions for international travelers. Millions of tourists from countries like the USA, the UK, Canada, and Australia can currently travel to the Schengen Area without a visa. However, starting at the end of 2026, the rules will change. The EU is introducing a new system called ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System. This system means that many travelers who currently travel visa-free will need to apply for a digital travel authorization before they can travel to Europe. But what does this mean in practice? Why is the EU implementing ETIAS and how will it affect travelers? In this article, we will cover everything you need to know.

What is ETIAS?
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system introduced by the European Union to enhance security at the EU’s external borders. The system works similarly to ESTA in the USA or ETA in the UK. This means that travelers from countries that currently do not require a visa must register their trip in advance. The application is made online and is digitally linked to the traveler’s passport. When a traveler applies for ETIAS, the information is automatically checked against several European databases to identify any security risks or migration issues. The aim is to detect risks before a person travels to the EU. It is important to understand that ETIAS is not a visa. It is merely a travel authorization for individuals who already have the right to travel visa-free to Europe.

When does ETIAS take effect?
After several delays, the EU plans to implement the system in the last quarter of 2026. The exact start date has not yet been determined, but authorities have announced that the public will be informed several months in advance before the system comes into effect. ETIAS will also be introduced alongside another system called EES (Entry/Exit System). This system will digitally register entries and exits, replacing the current manual passport stamps. Together, these two systems aim to create a more modern and digital border control in Europe.

Who needs ETIAS?
ETIAS applies to travelers from visa-free countries outside the EU. In total, this includes over 60 countries, including:

  • USA
  • UK
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Japan
  • South Korea

These travelers can still visit Europe without a traditional visa, but they must first apply for ETIAS before traveling. EU citizens, on the other hand, do not need to apply for ETIAS. The travel authorization will apply to trips to about 30 European countries, including the entire Schengen Area and some associated countries.

How does the application work?
The application for ETIAS will be entirely digital. Travelers will fill out an online form where they provide:

  • personal information
  • passport information
  • contact details
  • travel itinerary
  • certain security questions

In most cases, the application is expected to be approved automatically within a few minutes. Only a small percentage of applications will require manual review. Once the application is approved, the ETIAS authorization is electronically linked to the passport. This means that the traveler does not need to print any documents; airlines and border authorities can check the authorization digitally.

How long is ETIAS valid?
An approved ETIAS will be valid for up to three years, or until the passport expires. During this period, the traveler can make multiple trips to Europe. However, the same rules still apply for the stay:

  • Max 90 days in the Schengen Area
  • Within a 180-day period
If the traveler receives a new passport, a new ETIAS application must also be made.

What will ETIAS cost?
According to the latest information, the EU plans to charge a fee of around 20 euros for the application. However, certain groups may be exempt from the fee, such as:

  • children under 18 years
  • individuals over 70 years
The fee is paid online at the time of application.

Why is the EU implementing ETIAS?
The primary reason is security. By screening travelers before they arrive in the EU, authorities can identify individuals who may pose a security risk or violate migration rules. ETIAS is also part of the EU’s strategy to modernize border controls. As travel increases, authorities need better digital tools to manage large volumes of travelers.

The system will also help the EU to:

  • prevent illegal migration
  • combat terrorism and cross-border crime
  • improve control at the EU’s external borders

Possible challenges and criticism
Despite the benefits, some stakeholders in the travel and tourism industry have expressed concerns. When the new systems are implemented, for example, there may be longer queues at borders and airports during the transition period.

Additionally, there is a risk of confusion among travelers who are not aware of the new rules. Another issue is that fake websites have already started appearing online, trying to trick travelers into paying for ETIAS applications that do not yet exist. Therefore, authorities recommend always using official or trusted services when applying.

What does this mean for future travel to Europe?
For most tourists, ETIAS will not be a significant change. The application takes only a few minutes and is valid for several years.

However, the system marks an important step in how Europe manages its borders. Previously, many travelers could spontaneously travel to Europe without any prior registration. In the future, almost all international travel will require some form of digital pre-screening, whether traveling to the USA, the UK, or the EU. In other words, ETIAS is part of a global trend where countries want to know more about their visitors before they arrive.

Summary
ETIAS is the EU’s new travel authorization system planned to start at the end of 2026. It will be required for travelers from visa-free countries wishing to visit Europe.
The key points are:

  • Application is made online before travel
  • Valid for up to 3 years
  • Costs around 20 euros
  • Allows short stays of up to 90 days
  • Applies to about 30 European countries
For travelers, this means an extra step in planning, but at the same time, a system designed to make Europe’s borders safer and more digital.
