Extending Visa-Free Stay in Taiwan for Swedes

You step into a small office at the National Immigration Agency in Taipei, still warm from a cup of oolong from the corner shop. In front of you, an officer flips through your passport and calmly asks how long you plan to stay. This is where many Swedes get an unpleasant surprise, as visa-free time in Taiwan is often not something you can simply extend on the spot.

The problem arises because Taiwan makes a clear distinction between visa-free entry and visas that can actually be extended. Visa-free stay is a permission granted upon entry, not a visa with extension rights. When travel plans change, due to illness, remote work, or a round trip taking longer than expected, it is not enough to just go to the authorities and ask for more days.

Can Visa-Free Stay Be Extended in Taiwan?

For Swedish citizens traveling visa-free, the main rule is that the stay cannot be extended. Exceptions may occur in cases of force majeure or special humanitarian reasons, but do not count on that as plan A. In practice, the usual solution is to change course, either by leaving Taiwan and returning if the rules allow it, or by applying for the right type of visa before you exceed your allowed time.

If you are already close to your last day, do not rely on your gut feeling. Visit the NIA early and request written confirmation of what applies in your specific case.

Why You Encounter Issues When Trying to Extend On-Site

The NIA does not only look at how many days you want, but also at what status you received upon entry. Visa-free entry often lacks the mechanism for extension in the system, which means that the officer may be friendly but still say no. Many also confuse visa-free entry with Visitor Visa, which in some cases can be extended, and believe that the process is the same.

The Solution That Actually Works for Many

Start by checking exactly what status you have. Look at the entry stamp and any entry permit, and note the last allowed day. If you have a Visitor Visa in your passport, there is a greater chance that an extension can be made through the NIA, but visa-free entry is usually locked.

If you are in Taiwan visa-free and need more time, a short exit and re-entry may seem like an easy solution. However, in Taiwan, this is not guaranteed. The authorities may question frequent entries and exits, and you may need to show a continued travel plan, accommodation, and that you are indeed a tourist. Here, it is especially important to have a clear ticket out of Taiwan and a reasonable explanation.

If you want to stay longer for studies, internships, family reasons, or other purposes, you often need to switch to the correct type of visa through Taiwanese representation outside Taiwan. This may involve traveling to a nearby area to submit your application and then returning when the visa is ready.

Always allow margin in your calendar. Overstaying in Taiwan can result in fines and complicate future entries.

What to Do When Visiting NIA for Extension or Advice

Bring your passport, a printout or screenshot of your onward ticket, as well as the address and contact details of where you are staying in Taiwan. The officer often wants to see that you have funds for your stay and a plan for departure if you are denied. If you have reasons such as illness, have documentation from a hospital or clinic.

If you do have a Visitor Visa that can be extended, the NIA usually wants to see that you have not violated the conditions, such as through unauthorized work. The visit itself is often smooth, but it is the documents that matter. On VIZA.se, you can check exactly what documents are required for your trip.

Pitfalls That Swedes Often Fall Into

The most common mistake is waiting until the last week. Then your options disappear quickly, especially if you need to leave Taiwan to apply for another visa.

Another mistake is booking an exit that is not accepted as an onward ticket, or not being able to show it at all. Taiwan may ask for proof that you will leave the country within the allowed time.

Many also fail to count days correctly. Remember that it is the last date on the stamp that counts, not when you think the trip started. Double-check this early.

Finally, do not underestimate that a violation can show up during future entries. Even if fines may seem like a quick solution on-site, the consequences can be more expensive than a rebooking.

  • Proof of residence address in Taiwan
  • Onward ticket out of Taiwan
  • Documentation for special reasons, such as a medical certificate
  • Cash or card for any fees
