Malaysia Tightens MDAC Controls and More People Get Stuck in Entry Lines

Malaysia has recently begun implementing stricter checks on the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, MDAC, and this is immediately noticeable at immigration in Kuala Lumpur and at land borders from Thailand and Singapore. What used to slip through with a quickly filled-out form on a mobile device is now more frequently halted when the information does not match the passport or when the receipt cannot be presented.

The issue is that the MDAC does not feel like a visa, so many Swedes treat it as a mere formality. In practice, it functions as Malaysia’s digital entry declaration, and when it is missing or contains errors, you may be directed aside for additional questions. This wastes time, and sometimes you miss connections to Penang, Langkawi, or Borneo.

Why This Is Happening Right Now

Malaysia has increased its focus on advance information about travelers. As the MDAC is used more actively in checks, small careless mistakes become significant, especially if you are traveling with multiple stops and frequently changing hotels.

I personally witnessed a family in front of me having to fill everything out again on-site because they had accidentally entered the wrong passport number. They had internet access, but it still took time as they needed to find the address of their first accommodation and their flight number.

Complete the MDAC when you have your first accommodation and last flight segment into Malaysia sorted. This saves the most headaches.

Who Needs to Fill Out the MDAC When Traveling with a Swedish Passport

For most Swedish tourists flying into Malaysia, the MDAC is required prior to arrival. This applies even if you are only going to be there for a short time and even if you are visa-free for tourist visits.

Exceptions may occur for certain groups, but do not count on being exempt. If you are traveling as a family, each person typically needs their own registration, including children.

How to Fill Out the MDAC Without Getting Stuck on Details

Start by retrieving your passport, the booking for entry into Malaysia, and the address of your first accommodation. This could be a hotel in Kuala Lumpur or an apartment in George Town, but it is the first night that is usually requested.

When filling in names, write them exactly as they appear in the passport’s machine-readable line. Many Swedish travelers stumble over middle names, double surnames, or spelling with å, ä, and ö. If the form does not accept Swedish characters, use the Latin variant that the system suggests, and keep it consistent.

Travel details are the next trap. The flight number should be the segment that actually lands in Malaysia, not your first departure from Sweden. If you have a layover in Doha or Istanbul, the last plane in counts.

The accommodation section requires an address. If you are going directly to places like the Perhentian Islands and only have a transport night in Kuala Lumpur, use the address for the first booked night. If you have not yet decided on accommodation, wait with the MDAC until you have a confirmation.

Once everything is complete, you will receive a confirmation. Save it as a PDF if you want to be completely secure, but a screenshot often works just as well when coverage is shaky at the border.

If you are entering via a land border, your mobile may have poor reception. Keep the confirmation available offline.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Extra Questions Upon Entry

It is rarely about major errors, but rather small things that appear suspicious in the system. I have noticed that these are most common among Swedes who combine Malaysia with Singapore or Thailand.

  • Incorrect flight number, entering the first flight instead of the last one into Malaysia
  • Passport number with a swapped digit or letter
  • Missing or vague accommodation address, just the city without an address
  • Different spelling of names between MDAC and passport
  • MDAC completed too early and travel plans have changed

If you have already submitted the MDAC and change hotels or flights, go in and update if the system allows. Otherwise, make a new registration with the correct details and have the latest confirmation ready. Double-check that the arrival date matches the actual landing in Malaysia.

Practical Tips for Swedish Travelers to Avoid Stress

Have a plan for internet access. An eSIM or a local SIM makes life easier, but do not count on being able to fix everything at the last minute in line. Also, prepare the address in a format that is easy to copy, including the postal code if you have it.

If you are traveling with several people in your group, fill in one person at a time and check the confirmation immediately. Updated visa requirements and prices can be found at VIZA.se.
