Go to the Azerbaijan guide

It is late in the evening at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, and the air smells of freshly brewed tea from the kiosk beside the arrival flow. In front of you, signs for passport control are flashing, and what usually holds up Swedes here is not the queue, but a small detail in the visa or the address of the first night.

Why Swedes Get Stuck at Passport Control in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is quite straightforward at the border, but they want to see that your entry makes sense. This means that the eVisa must match your passport, that you can state where you will be staying, and that your travel plan does not raise questions.

The most common problem I hear about after Baku is that someone has an eVisa with a spelling error, or that they cannot show a booking when asked. Sometimes a screenshot is enough, but sometimes they want to see a real confirmation.

Have your first hotel address in Baku, or another location, easily accessible. This is one of the most common questions at the counter.

eVisa for Azerbaijan and What to Show

Swedish citizens usually need a visa to enter Azerbaijan as tourists. For most, this will be an eVisa through the official eVisa solution, and you will receive a document to show along with your passport.

What helps the most is to have the eVisa printed or ready on your mobile, plus a travel plan that seems reasonable. If the name on the application does not match the machine-readable line of the passport, you may receive unnecessary follow-up questions.

The entire application process is described step by step on VIZA.se.

Common Questions at the Counter

When I entered last time, several people in line received questions that sounded like a quick interview. Where will you stay the first night, how long are you staying, what is the purpose, and sometimes if you have a return ticket.

Answer briefly and clearly. Show your booking if asked, and it is good to have an offline copy in case roaming or Wi-Fi is problematic.

e-Gate in Baku and When You Can Use It

Sometimes there is an e-gate option, but do not expect it to always be open or suitable for all passports. If the e-gate does not accept your passport, just proceed to the staffed control without stressing.

A practical tip is to have your passport ready before you reach the front, as the staff often directs the flow depending on which gates are active. If you are traveling with others, you may also be split between different queues.

If you experience a technical issue at the e-gate, do not try multiple times in a row. This only creates a queue; instead, ask to go to a manual counter.

Immigration Card and Registration Inside Azerbaijan

Many Swedes wonder if there is a classic immigration card to fill out on the plane. Upon entering through Baku, it is often more digital and controlled by passport control, but procedures can vary depending on the airport and arrival.

What is more important in Azerbaijan is registration for longer stays. If you stay longer than a short tourist trip, you may need to register at your address through the migration authority, and hotels often help with this. For those staying privately, it is especially important to be aware of the regulations, otherwise, it could lead to complications upon departure.

Customs in Azerbaijan and What Usually Triggers Questions

After passport control, you will reach the baggage claim and then customs. Here, Azerbaijan is more attentive than many think, especially if you have a lot of electronics, large quantities of goods, or anything that looks like it is for sale.

If you are traveling with medications, bring the original packaging and preferably a simple doctor’s note in English if it is prescription medication. Alcohol and tobacco may also lead to follow-up questions if the quantities appear to be more than for personal use.

If you have something to declare, ask the staff directly. It is almost always smoother than ending up in a prolonged inspection.

How to Make Your Entry Smooth in Practice

What you want is a calm flow. Have your documents ready, answer briefly, and ensure that your mobile can actually display bookings when you are there.

I also double-check that the hotel address is in English and that I have a phone number for the accommodation. It may sound trivial, but it is exactly the kind of detail that allows you to pass without extra stops.

  • Passport, eVisa, and hotel address easily accessible
  • Return ticket or onward ticket in case you are asked
  • Offline copy of bookings, you can save as PDF
  • Medications in original packaging
  • Reasonable amounts of goods for personal use
