Entry to Kenya for Swedes with eTA and e-gate

It is just after dawn at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, and the humid air lingers in the corridor leading to immigration. Up ahead, the e-gate screens are flashing, while a classic queue winds next to them for manual counters. Here, your preparations determine whether you are out in the parking lot in ten minutes or still searching for a receipt on your phone.

First, what Kenya actually requires from Swedes

Kenya uses eTA for most visitors, including Swedish citizens. It is not a visa on arrival in the traditional sense, but a pre-approval that you show when traveling and again at the border.

You also need to demonstrate where you will be staying and how you will leave the country. In practice, they often ask for an address or hotel name, sometimes for a return ticket or onward ticket.

Comparison of options when entering Kenya

The choice usually lies between going through the e-gate if you are directed there and meet the requirements, or taking the manual counter. If you are traveling with children, have a complicated booking, or want to speak directly with an officer, the manual queue can actually be faster.

My recommendation for most Swedes is to aim for the e-gate first if it is open and the staff is waving you forward. If you are traveling with children or have several bookings and layovers that look messy, go directly to the manual counter and keep everything ready in one folder on your phone.

From landing to immigration without unnecessary stops

After you disembark, follow the signs to Arrivals and Immigration. At JKIA, the walk can be longer than you think, especially if you end up at the far end of the terminal.

Before you queue, take out your passport and eTA. I had a screenshot of the QR code or confirmation, which saved time when the internet was slow.

What they may actually ask you to show

At the counter or e-gate, it almost always comes down to three things: your eTA, your travel details, and your plans in Kenya. Be prepared to quickly show information that matches what you provided in your application.

• eTA confirmation and reference number or QR code
• hotel booking or address in Nairobi, Mombasa, or where you are going
• return ticket or onward ticket
• contact information, preferably a local number if you have one
• travel insurance may be requested, but not always

If your name or passport number was incorrect in the application, this is where it shows. Once, it was enough to show the confirmation and explain, but do not count on it always going as smoothly.

E-gate in Kenya: How it works in reality

When you arrive, you will often receive instructions from the staff. You scan your passport, follow the camera’s instructions, and wait for the green light. If it turns red, step aside and wait for assistance; this is more common than you think when people are stressed or holding the passport at an angle.

One trick is to remove hats and glasses and stand still for an extra second. It sounds trivial, but that was exactly what allowed my second scan to go through.

After passport control comes baggage and then customs

Once you are through immigration, head towards baggage claim. It can feel slow here if several flights have landed at the same time, so be patient.

Customs in Kenya is usually straightforward, but they may conduct random checks. If you are carrying expensive electronics for work, or many identical items, it may be wise to have a receipt or a brief explanation ready. Medications in larger quantities should preferably have a prescription or certificate.

There may also be staff directing you towards the green or red channel. Green means you have nothing to declare, red means you want to declare or have items that may require inspection.

The final stretch in the arrivals hall

Once you have passed through customs, you are in the arrivals hall where drivers and hotel representatives are waiting. If you have arranged for transfer, make sure the name is correct and that you know which exit to meet at.

I usually save the eTA confirmation as a PDF just to be able to show it offline if my phone loses signal. And yes, it is worth mentioning again, double-check that your passport is valid for the entire stay and that your return is within the time you applied for.

Quick decision: which lane should you choose

If you are traveling solo and everything is straightforward, choose the e-gate. If you are traveling with family, have a late connection, or suspect that any information in the eTA might trigger questions, choose manual immigration directly and enter calmly. Kenya rewards preparation, and the journey begins with the first stamp.
