The first time I tried to extend a tourist visa in Phnom Penh, I thought it would be as easy as picking up a package. It was not. The big surprise was that the rules are clear on paper, but the choice between doing it yourself and submitting through an agent affects the price, pace, and stress level.

Why Swedes Get Stuck on Visa Extensions in Cambodia

The most common problem is that travel plans change once you are on the ground. Angkor takes longer than planned, a bus onward to Kampot gets canceled, or you want to stay on an island a few extra days.

In Cambodia, the tourist visa, usually a T-visa, is typically valid for 30 days. Many are caught off guard by the fact that an extension is not something you do at the passport control, but rather through the immigration authority or via a local agent who submits on your behalf.

Another pitfall is confusing the tourist visa with the E-visa, which in Cambodia means ordinary visa, not electronic visa. This confusion leads to incorrect expectations about how long you can stay and what extensions are available.

What Tourist Visa Do You Have and What Can Be Extended

If you entered on a tourist visa, T-visa, you can usually extend it once for an additional 30 days. If you entered with an electronic tourist eVisa, the same logic applies; it is still a tourist visa, but you must extend it within the country following the same process.

The extension gives you more time in the country, but it does not change the type of visa. You cannot extend a tourist visa to a longer residency period of several months just by asking for more days.

Aim to start the process at least a week before your last allowed day. This way, you can handle holidays and unexpected delays without going over time.

How to Extend Your Visa Practically in Cambodia

There are two realistic paths for Swedes already in Cambodia. You can either submit through an agent or try to submit yourself at immigration offices where possible.

In Phnom Penh, many choose an agent because they know exactly what copies are needed and how the submission should be packaged. You will hand over your passport during processing, which may feel unusual, but it is common in Cambodia. Always ask for a receipt or a confirmation slip with the date and contact details.

If you do it yourself, you should expect more friction. You need to get to the right office, keep track of opening hours, and accept that you may need to return if some paperwork is missing. The advantage is that you have more control over your passport and sometimes a lower fee, but the time cost can be high.

The preparations are simple when you know what is typically requested. Have your Swedish passport with sufficient validity to cover your planned stay, as well as blank pages for stamps and labels. Also, have a passport photo ready, as it is often requested in connection with the extension.

You will also need to show where you are staying in Cambodia, at least an address or hotel name. In practice, a booking confirmation or a note with the address and phone number is often sufficient, but it should look reasonable.

Payment is often made in USD, even if you think in SEK. Bring cash and expect that small bills will make things easier, especially if you go through an agent who wants the exact amount.

If you submit through an agent, write down your passport number and take a picture of the information page in your passport before handing it over. This helps if you need to identify yourself during the process.

Costs and Timelines That Typically Apply

Cambodia has official fees, but the final price depends on whether you use an agent and how quickly you want your passport back. A standard extension of a tourist visa for 30 days usually costs around 45 to 60 USD in total through an agent, including the service fee. If you handle it yourself, the fee may be lower, but it varies and is not always worth the time if you are only in Phnom Penh for a few days.

The processing time is often a few business days. In practice, this means that you should plan to be without your passport for three to seven days if you use an agent, sometimes faster for an extra fee. If you have domestic flights, hotels that require a passport at check-in, or plan to rent a motorcycle, you need to time this accordingly.

Common Mistakes That Cause Issues in Cambodia

The most common mistake is applying too late. Overstay in Cambodia costs per day and can become an unnecessary expense when you could have submitted earlier.

Another mistake is assuming that a border trip solves everything. Sure, you can leave the country and come back with a new tourist visa, but this involves transport costs, the risk of changing regulations, and you must meet the entry requirements again. During certain periods, border crossings can also be more complicated than you anticipated.

Entering with the wrong visa type is also common. Some Swedes mistakenly take an ordinary visa, E-visa, thinking it is an eVisa. This can provide different extension opportunities but also requirements for documents that you do not have with you. Therefore, double-check the visa type in your stamp or label before planning the extension.

Do not forget that an extension is not a free pass for carelessness with documents. A blurry passport copy, a passport photo in the wrong format, or an unclear address can be enough for your application to be delayed.

  • Start the process at least seven days before the last day.
  • Have cash in USD and preferably smaller bills.
  • Prepare a passport photo and a clear passport copy.
  • Plan for days without your passport if you use an agent.
  • Write down where you live, with address and phone number.

When It May Be Smarter Not to Extend

If you plan to leave Cambodia within a few days, it may be cheaper to accept that you travel out as planned, rather than paying for both an extension and extra logistics. However, if you risk even a single day of overstay, it is often more economical to extend in time.

If you want to stay longer than an extra month, you need to reconsider. Then it is often an ordinary visa, not a tourist visa, that is the right path, as it can be extended for longer periods depending on the subcategory. For Swedes who just want a little more time to travel around, the tourist extension is the smoothest solution.

When you know the visa type in your passport and start in good time, extending in Cambodia becomes mostly a logistical issue. Plan for days without your passport, choose an agent if you want to minimize friction, and stay away from last-minute situations. Then you can spend your time on what really brings you here, temples, food, and slow evenings by the Mekong.
