Did you know that India’s e-Visa can become invalid if you choose the wrong visa category even if you are just traveling for tourism?

India offers several e-Visas that look similar in the application process but are assessed differently at the border. For Swedish citizens, the e-Visa is often the most convenient option, but the rules are stricter than many believe. Here are myths and truths, plus a practical guide through the application process.

Myth 1: e-Visa is the same as Visa on Arrival

Many confuse e-Visa with Visa on Arrival. India offers e-Visa for Swedes, but this does not mean you will receive a visa on-site without prior work.

You apply online, receive an electronic approval, and show it during your trip. Without approval, you may be stopped even before boarding, as the carrier usually requires proof of entry permission.

India’s official e-Visa portal describes the setup clearly. The Government of India states that the e-Visa is an electronic travel authorization that must be granted before entry.

Myth 2: Tourist e-Visa is sufficient for everything that feels like a vacation

The distinction between tourism and other purposes is sharper in India than in many other countries. If you plan to do volunteer work, internships, journalism, long courses, or paid assignments, a tourist e-Visa may be the wrong choice.

Business meetings, trade fairs, and contract negotiations typically belong under the Business e-Visa. Medical treatment fits the Medical e-Visa. Choosing the wrong category can lead to denied entry even if everything else appears correct.

Choose the visa type based on the purpose that you can briefly explain at passport control, not based on what seems easiest in the form.

Myth 3: Processing time is always three days

India’s e-Visa is often marketed as fast, but the reality varies. Many receive decisions within a few business days, but some applications end up in manual review.

Weekends in India, peak season, unclear uploads, and inconsistent information can extend the process. Plan with some margin, especially if you are traveling to multiple cities or have a fixed onward connection.

Myth 4: You can enter anywhere with an e-Visa

E-Visas typically only apply through designated airports and certain ports. The list is updated by Indian authorities and may differ between visa types.

If you plan to enter via a land border, you often need a different arrangement or a route that passes through an approved entry point. Therefore, check your arrival airport well in advance before paying for tickets.

Which e-Visa is suitable for Swedish travelers

For most vacation trips, the Tourist e-Visa is appropriate. For meetings and business trips, the Business e-Visa is the most common. For medical care, the Medical e-Visa is relevant, and a companion may also need a Medical Attendant e-Visa.

Below is a reference table for Swedish passports. Amounts may vary with season, exchange rate, and fee structure, so use it as a guideline and always check before payment. Updated visa requirements and prices can be found on VIZA.se.

Step by step guide to applying for India’s e-Visa

Start by ensuring that your Swedish passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay and that you have at least two blank pages for stamps. India still stamps upon entry and exit, even with an e-Visa.

Next, go to India’s official e-Visa website and select the correct category. It is easy to click the wrong option since several choices have almost the same name. Read the description, especially for Business and Conference, and choose the one that matches your actual purpose.

Fill in personal details exactly as they appear in your passport, including middle names if applicable. If your application requires the name to match the machine-readable line in the passport, an extra letter or a missing middle name can cause issues during verification.

After that, fill in travel details. Have your first address in India ready, such as hotel name and location. For round trips, it is usually sufficient to provide the first accommodation, but the information should be reasonable and traceable.

Upload your photo and passport copy according to the portal’s requirements. Photos that are too dark, have shadows on the face, or have the wrong background are common reasons for delays. The passport copy should be sharp, in color, and without clipped corners.

Pay the fee online with a card. Once the payment goes through, you will receive an application number. Save the confirmation, preferably as a PDF if you want it offline, and note that some banks may require extra verification for international payments.

Wait for a decision and track the status in the portal. When the e-Visa is approved, you will receive an ETA or e-Visa grant that you should print and bring with you. Also, have a digital copy available.

Upon arrival, show your passport and the approval. Border control may ask about your return ticket, address in India, and whether you have sufficient funds for your stay. The answers should match your application.

Common mistakes that can halt your trip to India

Most problems are small details that become significant when they end up in a system that matches information automatically. It is rarely about having done something “wrong” in substance, but rather that the information cannot be verified.

  • Wrong visa type for the purpose, especially when work or volunteer elements are involved
  • Unclear uploads, especially blurry passport copy or photo with shadows
  • Names that do not match the passport, such as missing middle names
  • Arrival via an entry point that does not accept e-Visas for your category
  • Too tight timing between application and departure, leaving no margin if the case gets stuck

If something feels uncertain, double-check especially the visa category and that your arrival airport is included among the approved entry points for the e-Visa.

Processing time and planning for Indian holidays

Indian holidays can affect processing times, and they vary between states. Additionally, periods around major holidays and peak tourism seasons can create queues.

If you are aiming for a specific departure date, it is wise to apply several weeks in advance. This way, you can also correct any uploads or supplements without stress.

When e-Visa is not sufficient for Swedes

If you plan to study longer, work, undertake journalistic assignments, or live in India for extended periods, the e-Visa is often the wrong route. Usually, a different visa is required through an embassy or visa center, with different documentation requirements.

For a typical vacation trip, however, the e-Visa often works very well, provided you choose the right category, upload clear documents, and allow time for the process. Then entering Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, or Goa often goes as smoothly as the e-Visa is intended to be.
