Swedish citizens can travel to Japan for up to 90 days without a visa for tourist or business purposes. For longer stays, work or studies, a visa is required.
Visit Japan Web (VJW) is Japan's digital entry and customs service. You register your passport, travel and accommodation details in advance and receive QR codes that speed up the arrival process.
Common visa types are the Temporary Visitor Visa, business visa, student visa and work visa. For studies and work, a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from Japanese authorities is usually required.

Visit Japan Web is Japan's digital entry service where you register your passport, travel and accommodation details before departure. You receive QR codes used at immigration and customs to speed up the process.
How does the application process work if I need a visa?
Choose the right visa type, fill in the application and upload a passport copy, photo and any other relevant documents. We review everything before submission and assist with contact with the embassy. When the visa is ready, the passport is collected from the Japanese Embassy in Stockholm.
What is required for a Temporary Visitor Visa?
A valid passport, visa photo 50x50 mm, completed application form and travel/accommodation plans. In some cases financial proof is also required.
What is required for a student or work visa?
Both visa types require a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) issued by Japanese immigration authorities. For a student visa you also need an acceptance letter from your school or university. For a work visa you need employment or invitation documents from your employer in Japan.
Your employer or school in Japan typically handles the COE application. The process takes time, so apply well in advance.
How long does processing take?
Processing time is normally around 2 weeks after submission to the embassy, but can vary depending on visa type and season. Apply well in advance of your planned departure to avoid stress.
