E-visa is valid for entry via approved border crossings and gives up to 30 days. For longer stays, multiple entries or specific purposes, a regular visa via the Russian Embassy in Stockholm is required. The power of attorney to us must always be legalised by a notary public, not apostilled.

Overview

How it works for Russia

Swedish citizens always need a visa to travel to Russia. Since 2023 an e-visa exists as a simpler option for shorter stays, but it only applies at selected border crossings and gives max 30 days. For longer stays, multiple entries or specific purposes such as business, studies or work, a regular visa via the Russian Embassy in Stockholm is still required. VIZA starts from what the Russian migration service, the embassy or the Russian inviter actually asks for. Then we run power of attorney legalisation at a notary public, review the invitation and prepare the full application. Common cases are tourist trips to Moscow and St Petersburg, business meetings, transit through Russia and visits to family or friends.

When needed

When do Swedes need a visa for Russia?

A visa is always required for Swedish citizens. These are the situations we see most:

  • You will visit Moscow, St Petersburg or another city as a tourist
  • You have a business meeting, fair or conference with a Russian counterpart
  • You will transit through Russia to a third country (e.g. Central Asia)
  • You will visit family or friends living in Russia
  • You plan a longer stay for studies, work or volunteering
  • You travel by cruise or train that crosses the Russian border

Important

Power of attorney is legalised, not apostilled

For Russia the power of attorney to VIZA must be legalised by a notary public, not apostilled. This is a common misunderstanding. An apostille does not apply here because Russia is not the target country for the power of attorney; the Swedish embassy process requires legalisation.

Translation, timing and embassy

Is Russian translation needed?

For the visa application, translation of Swedish documents is normally not required. The application form is filled in English or Russian. The invitation should be in Russian or English. If you have Swedish documents to be used in Russia after entry (e.g. for work or studies), authorized translation may be needed separately.

Timeline for a Russia visa

E-visas are usually processed within 4 business days. Regular visas via the embassy take 4 to 10 business days depending on queue and follow-ups. The total is affected by:

  • whether the invitation is correct and valid from the start
  • whether the photo has the right format (3.5 × 4.5 cm, white background)
  • whether the power of attorney is correctly legalised
  • queue at the Russian Embassy in Stockholm
  • whether the embassy requests additional documents

Do Swedish citizens need a visa for Russia?
Yes, always. Either an e-visa (up to 30 days via approved border crossings) or a regular visa via the Russian Embassy in Stockholm.
What is the difference between e-visa and regular visa?
E-visa is simpler and cheaper but only valid at selected border crossings and gives max 30 days. A regular visa gives more entries, longer validity and more entry points.
Why must the power of attorney be legalised?
The Russian Embassy requires the power of attorney to be legalised by a notary public for us to submit and collect your passport. An apostille is not enough here.

A tourist voucher is a confirmation from a Russian hotel or tour operator showing where you will stay. It is required for a tourist visa and must contain your name, dates and hotel details.
How long does it take?

Can I extend my visa in Russia?
No, e-visas cannot be extended. Regular visas can in some cases be extended via the Russian migration service, but it is complicated. Apply for the right validity from the start instead.
Which border crossings apply for e-visa?
E-visas are valid at selected airports (Moscow, St Petersburg, Kaliningrad, etc.), certain railway stations and ports. We verify that your route is approved before you book.
What happens if I get rejected?
