Frequently asked questions about visas for Sweden

Do I need a visa to visit Sweden?

It depends on your nationality and the purpose of your stay. If you come from a country outside the EU/EEA and your country is on the list of visa required nations, you need a Schengen visa for visits of up to 90 days.

If you are going to work, study or stay longer than 90 days, you need a residence permit instead. Contact us if you are unsure.

What is the difference between a Schengen visa and a residence permit?

A Schengen visa (Type C) is intended for short visits of up to 90 days within a 180 day period. It is valid throughout the Schengen area and can be issued for tourism, business or family visits.

A residence permit is required if you want to stay longer than 90 days, work or study in Sweden. The application is made through the Swedish Migration Agency and processing time is often longer.

How does VIZA.se help me with my application?

We review all your documents, help you fill out the application form and provide a complete checklist tailored to your case. You receive a finished application that is ready to be submitted.

Our job is to make sure everything is correct from the start, which reduces the risk of rejection or the need for additional documentation.

What documents are needed for a Schengen visa?

  • Valid passport (at least 3 months after planned departure, no more than 10 years old)
  • Biometric passport photo, no more than 6 months old
  • Travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 coverage in the Schengen area

  • Hotel booking or invitation from a person in Sweden
  • Proof of financial means, for example bank statements or a sponsor letter

Depending on the purpose of your visit, additional documents may be required.

What is required for a work permit in Sweden?

To get a work permit you need to have received a job offer from an employer in Sweden. The employer must offer a salary and working conditions that meet at least the collective agreement level. The position must have been advertised in Sweden and within the EU/EEA for at least ten days.

You also need to have a valid passport and show that the employer provides insurance for you (health insurance, life insurance, occupational injury insurance and occupational pension).

What is required for a student residence permit?

You need to be admitted to full time studies at a Swedish university or college. In addition to the admission letter, you need to show that you can support yourself during the entire study period, which currently means at least SEK 9,450 per month.

You also need comprehensive health insurance that is valid in Sweden. If you are studying for less than one year, the insurance must cover the entire study period.

How long does processing take at the Swedish Migration Agency?

Processing times vary by case type:

  • Schengen visa: normally 15 to 45 days
  • Work permit: 1 to 4 months depending on the complexity of the case
  • Student permit: usually 2 to 3 months
  • Residence permit for visits: typically 3 to 9 months

Our processing time (Standard: 3 days, VIP: 1 day) refers to the time it takes to review and prepare your application. A complete and correct application reduces the risk of delays at the Swedish Migration Agency.

Can VIZA.se guarantee that my permit will be approved?

No, the decision is always made by the Swedish Migration Agency and we cannot influence their assessment. What we can do is make sure your application is complete, correctly filled out and that all documents meet the requirements.

Experience shows that a large share of all rejections and delays are due to incomplete applications. By using our service, you reduce that risk significantly.

Can a representative submit the application on my behalf?

For Schengen visas, if you have applied for a visa to Sweden or another Schengen country within the last five years and provided fingerprints at that time, a representative can submit the application with a power of attorney.

Work permits and student permits are usually applied for digitally through the Swedish Migration Agency's online service, but representatives can assist here as well. We will guide you through which options apply in your specific case.
