Most people think that India’s e-Visa is a quick formality where all fields are obvious. In practice, it is often the small details in the form that determine whether the application goes through immediately or gets stuck in manual review.

India’s official e-Visa is managed by the Government of India through the portal indianvisaonline.gov.in. It states that the e-Visa is for travel with specific purposes and that you should apply online and enter through approved entry points.

Choose the Right e-Visa for India Before You Start

India has several e-Visa categories, and the form looks different depending on what you choose. For Swedish citizens going on vacation, the e-Tourist Visa is the most common, while meetings and trade fairs typically require the e-Business Visa.

Here is a comparison to help you choose before you fill in the first box.

How to Fill Out India’s e-Visa Form Without Getting Stuck

The form starts with basic data and a reference number is created early on. Write it down and use the same email address throughout the process, otherwise, it can easily get confusing when you need to go back.

When filling in your name, date of birth, and nationality, everything should match your Swedish passport, sometimes previous names are also requested. If the portal asks for identifying marks, it refers to visible characteristics such as moles or scars, and if you do not have any, you usually use “None.”

Passport details are the next critical part. You enter the passport number, issue date, and validity period, as well as the issuing authority and location. A common mistake is mixing up letters and numbers in the passport number, so double-check that line extra carefully.

Next comes the travel plan. You choose the arrival airport or another border point among the approved e-Visa entry points, as well as an approximate arrival date. If you have a route with a layover in, for example, Doha or Dubai, it does not affect the form itself, but you need to be able to show that your actual entry into India occurs at an approved port.

The address section in India usually requires the first accommodation, often a hotel. Write the address as the hotel states it, and have the phone number handy. For your Swedish home address, the registered address and a mobile number that works for any inquiries are usually sufficient.

Contact person in India is a field many take a chance on. If you are staying at a hotel, the hotel reception can serve as a reference, but then write the hotel’s name and switchboard number consistently. For the e-Business Visa, clearer Indian business contact details are often required.

The security and background questions come last and should be answered factually. If you answer yes to any question, you may need to explain in a free text field, and then the processing may take longer.

Uploading Photo and Passport Copy for India

The portal asks for a digital photo and a passport copy. Photos that look like selfies or have shadows are a recurring cause for rejection or requests for additional information. Choose a neutral background and ensure that your face is clearly visible.

The passport copy should normally be the page with personal details. Check that all corners are visible and that the text is sharp, otherwise, the system may reject the file.

Tip: Double-check current requirements on VIZA.se before booking your flight.

Payment and Receipt for India’s e-Visa

Once everything is filled out, you proceed to payment. The fee varies depending on the visa type and duration, and sometimes also by season. Save the payment receipt and your confirmation as a PDF after the application is submitted, as you may need to show documentation if questions arise.

When the e-Visa is approved, you receive an electronic confirmation. Have a printed copy or a clear copy on your mobile when you travel, as you often need to show it both before departure and at the arrival control in India.

Common Mistakes Swedes Make in India’s e-Visa Form

Small inconsistencies are often what causes issues, not major errors.

  • Wrong visa type, tourist when the trip is actually business
  • Passport number entered with mixed-up letter or digit
  • First accommodation in India left too vague or with the wrong phone number
  • Photo with shadows, glasses reflections, or incorrect cropping
  • Entry point not listed for e-Visa

Recommendation for a Smooth Application to India

For most Swedish vacation trips, the e-Tourist Visa is the right choice, and it pays off to fill out the form when you have hotel booking and flight details in front of you. If you are going for meetings or traveling on assignment, choose the e-Business Visa directly and be careful with Indian contact person and company details. This saves time and reduces the risk of having to redo the entire application.
