Icelandic authorities think in kennitala and registers: Registers Iceland (Þjóðskrá) for population records, Skatturinn for tax, ENIC/NARIC at the University of Iceland on Suðurgata for foreign degrees, a sýslumaður when a power of attorney is used in Kópavogur. Forms are in Icelandic; Danish, Faroese and English rarely suffice on originals. We apostille Swedish originals via Notarius Publicus and translate with Kammarkollegiet-authorized Icelandic. A document issued in Iceland is apostilled there – via the MFA and the District Commissioner of Greater Reykjavík. This is the document chain, not Keflavík arrival and not a visa.

How a Swedish original reaches Iceland

  1. 1 Find out who the recipient is

    Þjóðskrá, Skatturinn, ENIC/NARIC or a sýslumaður sends a checklist. The embassy at Kommendörsgatan 35 is rarely on it.

  2. 2 Order the right Swedish original

    Skatteverket, a court or a school issues the paper. Copies rarely suffice for ENIC/NARIC or a purchase against the property register.

  3. 3 Translate into Icelandic if needed

    ENIC/NARIC and most sveitarfélög want authorized Icelandic. Kammarkollegiet.

  4. 4 Notarise a power of attorney before apostille

    If a sýslumaður in Kópavogur or Reykjavík is to act for you, the umboð must be attested by Notarius Publicus in Sweden first.

  5. 5 Apostille and tracked return

    Notarius Publicus adds the apostille. You get the original (and translation) back, ready for submission in Iceland.is when the recipient takes a digital copy.

Iceland accepts Hague apostille on Swedish originals. Basic from SEK 1,595 per document. Embassy legalisation via the MFA is not required for Þjóðskrá, Skatturinn or ENIC/NARIC.

Can the embassy at Kommendörsgatan 35 apostille for me?
No. They help Icelandic citizens with passports and consular work. Apostille on Swedish originals is done by Notarius Publicus in Sweden. The Greek embassy is at number 16.
Do I need Danish or Faroese instead of Icelandic?
No. Icelandic, Danish and Faroese are separate Kammarkollegiet authorizations. Þjóðskrá and Skatturinn want Icelandic.
I already have an apostille.is?
Sometimes in the e-service, rarely on the original. ENIC/NARIC and many sveitarfélög read Icelandic. Apostille proves authenticity; translation makes the content readable.
