Correct path

The right path for Latvia

VID, AIC and Iedzīvotāju reģistrs in Riga, Daugavpils or Liepāja want proof the Swedish original is genuine. Apostille is issued by Notarius Publicus in Sweden. Forms are in Latvian. The embassy in Stockholm handles passports and consular work, not apostille.

Overview

How it works for Latvia

Latvian authorities think in registers: Iedzīvotāju reģistrs (via PMLP) for population records, VID for tax and personas kods, AIC for nostrification of foreign degrees, Zemesgrāmata when buying a flat in Rīga or Liepāja. Forms are in Latvian; Russian and English rarely suffice on originals. We apostille Swedish originals via Notarius Publicus and translate with Kammarkollegiet-authorized Latvian. A document issued in Latvia is apostilled there, not by us. This is the document chain, not a visa or residence permit.

When needed

Typical situations in Latvia

The contact usually comes from Iedzīvotāju reģistrs, VID, AIC, the pašvaldība or a zvērināts notārs – not from the embassy on Odengatan:

  • Birth or marriage certificate must enter Iedzīvotāju reģistrs after a move to Rīga
  • Personas kods and tax papers to VID
  • Nostrification of a Swedish degree via AIC
  • Flat purchase – extracts for Zemesgrāmata
  • SIA or company papers for a counterparty in Daugavpils
  • Power of attorney for an agent before a notārs in a property deal in Liepāja

How a Swedish original reaches Latvia

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Find out who the recipient is

Iedzīvotāju reģistrs, VID, AIC or Zemesgrāmata sends a checklist. The embassy on Odengatan is rarely on it.

  2. 2 Order the right Swedish original

Skatteverket, a court or a school issues the paper. Copies rarely suffice for nostrification or a property purchase.

  3. 3 Translate into Latvian if needed

AIC and most pašvaldības want authorized Latvian. Kammarkollegiet.

  4. 4 Notarise powers of attorney before apostille

If a zvērināts notārs in Rīga or Liepāja is to act for you, the power of attorney must be attested by Notarius Publicus in Sweden first.

  5. 5 Apostille and tracked return

Notarius Publicus adds the apostille. You get the original (and translation) back, ready for submission in Latvia.

Important

Apostille via Notarius Publicus

Latvia accepts Hague apostille on Swedish originals. Basic from SEK 1,595 per document. Embassy legalisation via the MFA is not required for VID, AIC or Iedzīvotāju reģistrs.

Typical Latvia cases we see

Move to Rīga – registration in Iedzīvotāju reģistrs After EU relocation, PMLP wants a Swedish birth and marriage certificate with an apostille. Latvian is almost always required on the original.

Typical documents

  • Latvian

Latvian → apostille

Often 5–8 business days in Basic

Nostrification via AIC A Swedish university degree must be compared to the Latvian standard. AIC wants an apostilled original plus authorized Latvian.

Latvian → apostille

Allow extra time for longer grade records

Flat in Liepāja – Zemesgrāmata The buyer or notārs asks for a Swedish extract on income or marital status. A power of attorney is often notarised before apostille.

  • Power of attorney
  • Apostille

Notarisation → apostille (+ Latvian if needed)

3–10 business days depending on the chain

Authorized Latvian

Kammarkollegiet-approved translation from SEK 1,495. AIC often requires both apostille and Latvian in the same case.

How long does it take?

Apostille in Basic often takes 3–5 business days once the original is in. Add time for:

  • ordering a Swedish original from Skatteverket or a school
  • authorized Latvian on longer grade records
  • notarisation of a power of attorney before apostille
  • several documents in the same nostrification case

FAQ

Can the embassy on Odengatan apostille for me?
No. They help Latvian citizens with passports and consular work. Apostille on Swedish originals is done by Notarius Publicus in Sweden.
Do I need Lithuanian or Russian instead of Latvian?
No. Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian are separate Kammarkollegiet authorizations. VID and AIC want Latvian.
I already have an apostille – is English enough?
Rarely. VID and AIC read Latvian. Apostille proves authenticity; translation makes the content readable.
