Documents for France

Swedish documents for France

France is in the Hague Convention. That means apostille, not an embassy chain. Mairie offices, notaires, préfectures and universities in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice or Bordeaux often want Swedish originals with an apostille and text in French. We set the chain from the recipient list.

Correct path

An apostille is enough. No embassy stamp needed

Sweden and France are both in the Hague Convention. An apostille via Notarius Publicus replaces MFA and embassy. Mairie offices, notaires and many authorities often still want authorized French translation. Private powers of attorney (procuration / pouvoir) are notarised before apostille.

Overview

How it works for France

Swedish personal records, marriage certificates, diplomas and company extracts are used widely in France, but the recipient wants proof they are authentic. Because France is in the Hague Convention, an apostille via Notarius Publicus is enough. No stamp from the French embassy is needed for ordinary legalisation. VIZA starts from what mairie, notaire, préfecture, university or bank in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux, Toulouse or another city actually asks for. Then we run French translation when needed, notarisation of powers of attorney and apostille. Common cases are état civil, PACS or marriage, property purchase, succession and studies.

When needed

When do French recipients want an apostille?

The requirement comes from mairie, notaire, préfecture or a school in France. These are the situations we see most:

  • Mairie will register marriage, PACS, birth or a name and asks for an apostilled Swedish personal record
  • Préfecture or OFII wants legalised supporting papers for residence or family reunification
  • A French notaire requires an apostilled procuration before a property purchase or sale from Sweden
  • Succession or inheritance in France needs apostilled Swedish civil documents
  • A university or employer in Paris or Lyon wants apostilled grades or a criminal record certificate
  • A bank or RCS related matter requires an apostilled company extract

From a Swedish document to an accepted France chain

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Read the requirement from France

We start from the mairie list, notaire email or préfecture checklist. That decides whether French, notarisation or only apostille is needed.

  2. 2 Translate into French when required

Many mairie offices and notaires want authorized French. English is rarely enough. We can run translation before or in parallel with apostille.

  3. 3 Notarise private powers of attorney

Procuration and other private documents are certified by a Notarius Publicus before apostille. Public extracts can often be apostilled directly.

  4. 4 Apostille via Notarius Publicus

We place the apostille under the Hague Convention. It replaces MFA and embassy between Sweden and France.

  5. 5 Return to you

You get the papers back with tracked post, ready for mairie, notaire or préfecture in France.

Important

Apostille for France, not embassy legalisation

France is in the Hague Convention. That makes apostille the correct path for Swedish public documents. A separate stamp at the French embassy is not needed for ordinary legalisation. The recipient may still require authorized French translation. Apostille for France starts from SEK 499 in Basic.

Translation, timing and embassy

Why French is usually needed

Mairie offices, French notaires and many authorities rarely accept English alone. Authorized French translation is therefore a separate step, even when apostille already covers legalisation. We translate with a Kammarkollegiet approved translator from SEK 1,495 and can sync it with apostille. Translation plus apostille package from SEK 1,895.

Timeline before mairie, notaire or préfecture

Apostille usually takes a few business days in Basic once originals are in. Add time for French translation and any notarisation of a power of attorney. The total is affected by:

  • whether the power of attorney must be notarised first
  • whether authorized French should run in parallel
  • capacity at Notarius Publicus
  • number of documents in the same case
  • post for originals and return
  • whether the recipient in France wants a specific order of translation and apostille
French embassy vs apostille

For ordinary legalisation of Swedish documents for France you do not need an embassy stamp. Apostille via Notarius Publicus is the Hague path. The French Embassy in Stockholm has its own consular services, but that is a different track from apostille. We help you choose the right path from the recipient requirement.

  • Apostille for Swedish public documents
  • Notarisation of procuration
  • Authorized French translation
  • Ordering Swedish extracts when needed
  • No MFA or embassy chain for ordinary legalisation
  • Tracked return to you in Sweden
