Apostille is enough – the embassy does something else

Slovakia is in the EU and Schengen and is a Hague country. For Swedish originals, Notarius Publicus is enough. Arsenalsgatan 2 handles passports and consular work – not apostille for matrika or MŠVVŠ.

How it works for Slovakia

Slovak authorities think in registers: matrika for population records, Finančná správa for tax and rodné číslo, MŠVVŠ for nostrification of foreign degrees, katastr nemovitostí when buying a flat in Bratislava or Košice. Forms are in Slovak; English is rarely accepted. We apostille Swedish originals via Notarius Publicus and translate with Kammarkollegiet-authorized Slovak – separate from Czech. A document issued in Slovakia is apostilled there via a krajský súd, not by us. This is the document chain, not a visa or residence permit.

How a Swedish original reaches Slovakia

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

1 Find out who the recipient is

Matrika, Finančná správa, MŠVVŠ or the land registry sends a checklist. The embassy on Arsenalsgatan is rarely on it – ask us if you are unsure.
2 Order the right Swedish original

Skatteverket, a court or a school issues the paper. Copies rarely suffice for nostrification or a property purchase.
3 Translate into Slovak if needed

MŠVVŠ and most úrad obce want authorized Slovak. Kammarkollegiet – not Czech or an informal translation.
4 Notarise powers of attorney before apostille

If a notár in Bratislava or Žilina is to act for you, the power of attorney must be attested by Notarius Publicus in Sweden first.
5 Apostille and tracked return

Notarius Publicus adds the apostille. You get the original (and translation) back, ready for submission in Slovakia.

Slovakia accepts Hague apostille on Swedish originals. Basic from SEK 850 per document. Embassy legalisation via the MFA is not required for matrika, MŠVVŠ or Finančná správa.

How long does it take?

Apostille in Basic often takes 3–5 business days once the original is in. Add time for:

ordering a Swedish original from Skatteverket or a school
authorized Slovak on longer grade records
notarisation of a power of attorney before apostille
several documents in the same nostrification case

Can the embassy on Arsenalsgatan apostille for me?

No. They help Slovak citizens with passports and consular work. Apostille on Swedish originals is done by Notarius Publicus in Sweden.

Do I need Czech instead of Slovak?

No. Czech and Slovak are separate Kammarkollegiet authorizations. MŠVVŠ and matrika want Slovak.

I already have an apostille – is English enough?

Rarely. Finančná správa and MŠVVŠ read Slovak. Apostille proves authenticity; translation makes the content readable.
