Documents for Somalia

Document services for Somalia

Somalia is not in the Hague Convention. Swedish public documents go via Notarius Publicus, the Swedish MFA and the Somali Embassy in Sollentuna. We add authorized Somali when a registry, school or bank asks for it.

Correct path

The right path for Somalia

Apostille is not enough. The chain is notarisation when needed, MFA, then a stamp at the Somali Embassy in Sweden.

Overview

How it works for Somalia

The Somali Embassy in Sollentuna stamps after MFA. Apostille is not enough. A registry, school or bank in Mogadishu often wants Somali, not English. We confirm the stamp can be issued before we bill the embassy step. Standard documents follow the list price; longer texts after a scan.

When needed

When do Somali recipients want embassy legalisation?

The request comes from a registry, university, bank, court or employer. Typical cases:

  • Marriage or kinship to be recorded in Mogadishu
  • Studies where Somali universities ask for legalised Swedish grades
  • Probate, property or a power of attorney a Somali notary must rely on
  • A bank or company file that wants a Bolagsverket extract
  • A name change or marital status against the Somali register
  • Return cases where Swedish documents must be used on the ground

From a Swedish document to an accepted chain for Somalia

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Read the Somalia requirement

We start from the recipient checklist. That decides language, notarisation and stamp.

  2. 2 Translate into Somali when required

Many recipients in Somalia want authorized Somali. Even in English-speaking countries the original Swedish text often still needs a certified translation.

  3. 3 Notarise private powers of attorney

Powers of attorney are attested by Notarius Publicus before the stamp. Public extracts can often be stamped directly.

  4. 4 Embassy legalisation

Somalia is not in the Hague Convention. Apostille via Notarius Publicus does not replace MFA and the embassy. Legalisation for Somalia starts from SEK 2,495 in Basic. The embassy’s own tariff may be added.

  5. 5 Return to you

You get the documents by tracked post, ready for the recipient in Somalia.

Translation, timing and embassy

Why Somali is usually needed

Somali agencies and schools rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized Somali from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step. From SEK 1,495 for a standard document. Fewer translators than the major languages, so longer texts are priced after a scan. Translation plus legalisation from SEK 3,495.

Timeline for a registry, school or bank

The embassy chain usually takes several weeks. Add time for Somali translation and any notarisation. The total depends on:

  • whether a power of attorney must be notarised first
  • whether authorized Somali must finish in parallel
  • MFA processing
  • capacity and tariff at the Somali Embassy in Sollentuna
Somali Embassy vs apostille

The embassy in Sollentuna stamps the chain MFA has already started. It does not replace Notarius Publicus, and apostille does not replace the embassy. We confirm the stamp can be issued before we bill the embassy step.

  • No apostille for ordinary legalisation to Somalia
  • Notarisation of powers of attorney before MFA
  • Authorized Somali translation
  • MFA and embassy chain for Swedish public documents
