Swedish power of attorney

Notarisation and apostille of a Swedish fullmakt

A fullmakt is a power of attorney you sign yourself. It is not a printout from Skatteverket. The office abroad wants a notary to have seen that signature, and they want to read the text. We take notarisation, translation and apostille in one case.

The fullmakt

Who may do what

The text has to name the person giving the power, the person receiving it, and what they may do. A blank form from the internet often says too little. The names have to match the passports.

Notarisation

The signature, in front of a notary

A private fullmakt is signed in front of a Notarius Publicus in Sweden. That is the step a personbevis usually skips. Notarisation starts at 695 kr.

Apostille

The stamp sits on the notarised fullmakt

The apostille goes on the fullmakt after the notary. It says the notary is authorised. It does not translate a line. Translation by someone authorised by Kammarkollegiet starts at 1 495 kr. Apostille starts at 1 595 kr.

Pay only for the steps they asked for

Notarisation comes before the package and starts at 695 kr. The package is translation and apostille. Sometimes one of those steps is enough.

Complete route

Translation and apostille, together Best value

The notary sees the signature first. Then the translation and the apostille run side by side, and the fullmakt comes back ready to file.

What the fullmakt needs to say

A fullmakt gives someone else the right to act for you. When an office asks you to notarise one, they mean a notary has to see the signature. A photo of a page you signed at the kitchen table is not that.

Send the letter from the bank, the notary or the authority before you sign. We will say whether their form covers the job, or whether it gives away more than you meant.

The names have to match the passports. A nickname, or an old spelling, is a common reason the paper comes back.

How the case runs

1

Write the fullmakt

Or send us their requirement first, if you are not sure what the text must cover. We say so before you sign the wrong paper.

2

Sign in front of a notary

A Notarius Publicus in Sweden sees the signature. A signature you already put on at home is the wrong paper for an apostille.

3

Translation and apostille

The apostille lands on the notarised fullmakt. The translation is done by a translator authorised by Kammarkollegiet. Both come back to you.

The notary first, the apostille after

An apostille does not witness your signature. A Notarius Publicus does. The apostille then says that notary is authorised to do so. A personbevis from Skatteverket is already an official extract and usually skips this step. A private fullmakt does not.

How a personbevis is handled

Where is the fullmakt going?

The country decides between an apostille and a route through the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and that country’s embassy. Notarisation comes first either way. Pick the recipient and you land on that country’s page, where you can choose from there.

Thailand, China and the United Arab Emirates do not take an apostille on this fullmakt. The route runs through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the embassy. That package starts at 3 495 kr. Notarisation still comes first.

Questions people ask before they sign

What is a fullmakt?

It is a Swedish power of attorney. You sign it to let someone else act for you, at a bank, a notary or a land registry. It is a private document, not an extract from Skatteverket.

Can I sign at home and send a scan?

Not if they want an apostille. The notary has to see the signature. A scan can be translated. It does not stand in for the original.

Does the fullmakt have to be in Swedish?

Often you write it in Swedish, and a translator authorised by Kammarkollegiet puts it into the language they asked for. Sometimes they want both languages on the same paper. Send their text and we will say which version holds.

How recent does it need to be?

The recipient sets the date. Many banks and notaries want a fullmakt no more than a couple of months old. We will not invent a deadline for a country you have not named. Send their requirement and we will say whether the date still holds.

Can you translate a fullmakt into English?

Yes. English is the usual language for the USA, the United Kingdom, and offices that ask for English. The translator is authorised by Kammarkollegiet. The country you pick below names the language for that case.

What does notarisation and apostille cost?

Notarisation starts at 695 kr. Authorised translation starts at 1 495 kr. Apostille starts at 1 595 kr. The package with translation and apostille starts at 2 395 kr. Countries without apostille, such as Thailand, China and the United Arab Emirates, go through the embassy. That package starts at 3 495 kr. Notarisation still comes first.

Do I get the original back?

Yes. The apostille stays on the notarised fullmakt, and the fullmakt comes back with the translation.

Not sure what the fullmakt should cover?

Send the letter from the bank, the notary or the authority. We will say what the text needs to include, and whether that country wants an apostille or the embassy, before you sign the wrong paper.
