Embassy legalisation

Legalisation for China

China does not accept an apostille for documents used on the mainland. For Swedish papers to be valid with Chinese authorities, employers, banks and universities, we run the full chain via Notary Public when required, the Swedish MFA and the Chinese Embassy in Stockholm.

When is embassy legalisation for China needed?

When Swedish documents must be used officially in China, full embassy legalisation is required. That covers work permits and Z visas, family reunification, studies, adoption, company setup and banking in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and the rest of the mainland. Without the correct stamp chain, documents are often rejected at the first review. The exception is Hong Kong and Macao which are covered by the Hague Convention and accept an apostille.

Who orders legalisation for China?

People who have signed contracts in tech, manufacturing, education or finance in China. Families reuniting, students admitted to Chinese universities, and Swedish companies submitting registry extracts, powers of attorney or agreements to Chinese counterparts.

The process for China

1

Review and package selection

You send a scan or the original. We flag whether notarisation and Chinese translation are needed before or in parallel with MFA and embassy. You get a fixed price before we proceed.

2

Notarisation when required

Private documents such as powers of attorney are certified by a Notary Public. Public extracts can sometimes go straight to the MFA. We tell you which applies to your document.

3

Swedish MFA

The MFA legalises the document and certifies that the Swedish signature or stamp is authentic.

4

Chinese Embassy and return

We submit to the Chinese Embassy in Stockholm for final legalisation. Finished documents are sent with tracked post.

FAQ | legalisation for China

Does China accept an apostille?
No for the mainland. China did join the Hague Convention in November 2023, but in practice most Chinese recipients still require embassy legalisation. Hong Kong and Macao accept an apostille. We always verify what your specific recipient demands.
How are the steps ordered?
Private documents are notarised first, then MFA and finally the Chinese Embassy. Chinese translation can run before or in parallel depending on the recipient requirements.
What does the embassy fee cost?
It varies per document and type according to the embassy tariff. We specify the amount before submission so there are no surprises.
Is an English translation enough?
Rarely. Chinese authorities and universities generally want Simplified Chinese. We offer authorized Swedish to Chinese translation from SEK 1,495.
How long does it take?
Basic usually takes 10 to 20 business days depending on MFA and embassy processing times. Priority and VIP shorten our coordination where possible.
Can you order Swedish extracts for me?
Yes. We often help obtain personal records, criminal record certificates and company extracts before legalisation begins.
Can companies use the service?
Yes. We legalise company extracts, powers of attorney, agreements and other trade documents for Chinese counterparts and authorities.
What is included in the price from SEK 2,495?
Our handling of the full legalisation chain in Basic, Priority or VIP. Notarisation, translation and the embassy fee are added when needed and specified in advance.
