Swedish originals are apostilled by Notarius Publicus. Global Affairs Canada and some provinces apostille Canadian documents. The embassy in Stockholm can in some cases apostille Canadian papers, not Swedish ones. English suffices toward WES and most CRA files. Québec’s Directeur de l’état civil often wants French. SIN and tax sit with CRA, not IRCC.

How it works for Canada

Canada has taken apostille only since 2024. Civil status is not federal: Ontario has the Registrar General at ServiceOntario, Québec has Directeur de l’état civil, British Columbia has Vital Statistics. WES, IQAS and ICES are degree-evaluation bodies. CRA issues SIN. A company can be federal (Corporations Canada) or provincial (Ontario Business Registry). Land in Ontario goes via Land Registry, in BC via LTSA. Québec’s civil-status track is French. eTA and IRCC are about entry. Swedish originals are apostilled by Notarius Publicus. Canadian originals are apostilled by Global Affairs Canada or the competent province.

The request is in the WES portal, at the Registrar General or with a lawyer. Typical files:

ServiceOntario must enter a Swedish marriage certificate in Ontario
CRA must issue SIN against identity papers

A lawyer in Vancouver must register a purchase toward BC LTSA
A company must enter Corporations Canada or the Ontario Business Registry

1 Which province – and is it WES?

Ontario, Québec and BC have their own registrars. WES is an evaluation body, not a government. IRCC can require WES without eTA having anything to do with the document.
2 Order the original in Sweden

A personal extract from Skatteverket, a diploma from the university. WES and a lawyer toward LTSA rarely take a PDF without apostille.
3 English – French in Québec

WES and ServiceOntario want authorized English (the same authorization as toward the USA; the file goes to WES, not USCIS). Québec’s Directeur de l’état civil usually asks for French.
4 A power of attorney is attested in Sweden

If a lawyer in Vancouver is buying for you, Notarius Publicus attests the power of attorney here. A Canadian notary does not stamp that Swedish instrument.
5 Apostille here since 2024, Global Affairs there

Notarius Publicus puts apostille on Swedish papers. Global Affairs Canada apostilles Canadian originals. You send to ServiceOntario, WES or a lawyer.

Canada has been in the Hague Convention since 11 January 2024. Apostille via Notarius Publicus replaces MFA and an embassy stamp. Apostille for Canada starts from SEK 1,595 in Basic.

ServiceOntario and WES rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized English from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, the same pair as for the USA. From SEK 1,495 for a standard document. Translation plus apostille from SEK 1,895. Québec’s Directeur de l’état civil often wants French.
