Ethiopia is outside the Hague Convention. For Swedish originals: notarisation when needed, MFA, then a stamp at the Ethiopian Embassy in Stocksund. Apostille does not replace the chain toward CRRSA.

How it works for Ethiopia

Ethiopian authorities think in CRRSA for civil status and vital events (formerly VERA), FAYDA with a FIN as digital ID, the Ministry of Revenue and TIN for tax, ETA – the Education and Training Authority, formerly HERQA.gov.et, DARS for powers of attorney and contracts that must be registered in Ethiopia. Forms are in Amharic Geʽez script in Addis Ababa; Oromo in Qubee Latin in Oromia. Amharic is not Tigrinya for Eritrea, not Somali and not Oromo. The package covers Amharic; Oromo is a separate pair. We run notarisation when needed, MFA and the embassy at Brovägen 5 in Stocksund, and translate with Kammarkollegiet. A document issued in Ethiopia is legalised there via MFA and DARS in Addis Ababa. This is the document chain, not an e-visa.

When do Ethiopian recipients want embassy legalisation?

The contact usually comes from CRRSA, FAYDA, ETA, DARS or tax – not from the e-visa portal:

How a Swedish original reaches Ethiopia

1 Find out who the recipient is

CRRSA, FAYDA, ETA or DARS sends a checklist. The embassy at Brovägen 5 is rarely on it. An e-visa is not on that list.
2 Order the right Swedish original

Skatteverket, a court or a school issues the document. Copies rarely suffice for CRRSA or a purchase DARS must register.
3 Translate into Amharic or Oromo

Addis Ababa usually wants authorized Amharic in Geʽez. Oromia wants Oromo in Qubee. Not Tigrinya for Eritrea and not Somali. The package covers Amharic.
4 Notarise the power of attorney before MFA

If DARS in Addis Ababa or Hawassa is to register a power of attorney, it must be attested by Notarius Publicus in Sweden first.
5 MFA, embassy and tracked return

CRRSA and ETA rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized Amharic from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, not Tigrinya. From SEK 1,495 for a standard document. Translation plus legalisation from SEK 3,495 covers Amharic. Oromo is a separate pair.

The embassy chain usually takes several weeks. Add time for Amharic or Oromo and any notarisation. The total depends on:

whether the power of attorney must be notarised before DARS
whether authorized Amharic or Oromo must run in parallel
processing at MFA
the queue at Brovägen 5 and any extra embassy tariff

Ethiopian Embassy vs apostille

The embassy at Brovägen 5, 3rd floor, in Stocksund stamps the chain MFA has already started. Birger Jarlsgatan 39 is outdated. Apostille does not replace the embassy. An e-visa is a different product.

FAQ

Can the embassy at Brovägen 5 apostille for me?

No. Ethiopia does not take an apostille. They stamp the MFA chain for Swedish originals. Birger Jarlsgatan 39 is an outdated address.

Do I need Tigrinya or Somali instead of Amharic?

No. Tigrinya is Eritrea’s Kammarkollegiet language. Somali is another. Amharic in Geʽez is Ethiopia’s main pair. Oromo in Qubee is a separate pair when Oromia asks for it.

Is an e-visa enough as a document stamp?

No. An e-visa is entry. CRRSA, FAYDA and ETA want the MFA chain on the document. We do not sell an Ethiopian visa here.
