Embassy chain – apostille is not enough for the national card

Iraq is outside the Hague Convention. For Swedish originals: notarisation when needed, MFA, then a stamp at the Iraqi Embassy in Stockholm. Passport work and legalisation are two different chains.

How it works for Iraq

Iraqi authorities think in two tracks: the federal civil register and the national card against the Ministry of Interior in Baghdad, and in Kurdistan the General Directorate of Nationality in Erbil. Tapu for property, the General Commission for Taxes, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for degrees, the Registrar of Companies for companies. Forms are in Kurdish Sorani script in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, often Arabic in Baghdad and Basra. Kurdish is the Kammarkollegiet language. We run notarisation when needed, MFA and the embassy at Baldersgatan 6A-B, and translate with authorized Kurdish. A document issued in Iraq is legalised there via Iraqi MFA in Baghdad. We confirm the stamp before we bill the embassy step. This is the document chain, not an e-visa.

When needed

When do Iraqi recipients want embassy legalisation?

The contact usually comes from civil status, tapu, higher education or a notary – not from the e-visa portal:

How a Swedish original reaches Iraq

1 Find out who the recipient is

Civil status, tapu or higher education sends a checklist. The embassy at Baldersgatan 6A-B is rarely on it. An e-visa is not on that list.
2 Order the right Swedish original

Skatteverket, a court or a school issues the document. Copies rarely suffice for tapu or a purchase toward the Registrar of Companies.
3 Translate into Kurdish if needed

Erbil and most Kurdistan counters want authorized Kurdish. Kammarkollegiet.
4 Notarise a wakala before MFA

If a notary in Erbil or Baghdad is to act for you, the power of attorney must be attested by Notarius Publicus in Sweden first.
5 MFA, embassy and tracked return

We run MFA and the Iraqi Embassy at Baldersgatan 6A-B. We confirm the stamp before we bill the step. Iraqi originals are not legalised here.

Why Kurdish is usually needed

Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and many tapu counters rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized Kurdish from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, not Arabic. From SEK 1,495 for a standard document. Translation plus legalisation from SEK 3,495.

Timeline for civil status, tapu or a degree

The embassy chain usually takes several weeks. Add time for Kurdish and any notarisation. The total depends on:

whether the wakala must be notarised first
whether authorized Kurdish must run in parallel
processing at MFA
confirming the stamp at Baldersgatan 6A-B before we invoice

The embassy at Baldersgatan 6A-B stamps the chain MFA has already started. Släggbacken 9 handles passports. Apostille does not replace the embassy. An e-visa is a different product. We confirm the stamp before we bill the step.

FAQ

Can the embassy at Baldersgatan 6A-B apostille for me?

No. Iraq does not take an apostille. They stamp the MFA chain for Swedish originals. Passports go to Släggbacken 9 in Solna.

Do I need Arabic or Persian instead of Kurdish?

No. Arabic, Persian and Kurdish are separate Kammarkollegiet authorizations. Erbil and Sulaymaniyah want Kurdish. Baghdad often takes Arabic.

Is an e-visa enough as a document stamp?

No. An e-visa is entry. Civil status, tapu and higher education want the MFA chain on the document.
