Correct path

The right path for Ireland

GRO, Revenue and QQI want proof the Swedish original is genuine. Apostille is issued by Notarius Publicus in Sweden. Forms are in English. Stamp 4 and ISD are residence, not a stamp on the document. The embassy in Stockholm handles passports and consular work, not apostille. DFA apostilles Irish originals, not Swedish ones.

Overview

How it works for Ireland

Civil status in Ireland sits with GRO – Oifig an Ard-Chláraitheora. Revenue wants PPSN papers. QQI and NARIC Ireland compare a Swedish degree. Tailte Éireann takes land (formerly PRAI). CRO takes companies. Because Ireland is in the Hague Convention, apostille via Notarius Publicus is enough. DFA in Dublin and Cork apostilles documents issued in Ireland, not Swedish extracts. English is the receiving language; it is the same Kammarkollegiet pair as for the USA and the UK, but the stamp is a separate product toward GRO. EU Regulation 2016/1191 can give multilingual civil-status forms that reduce translation for some GRO files; QQI and Tailte Éireann still usually want English plus apostille. Documents issued in Ireland are apostilled there, not here. This is the document chain, not Stamp 4.

When needed

When do Irish recipients want apostille?

The request comes from GRO, Revenue, QQI, Tailte Éireann or a solicitor. Typical situations:

  • Birth or marriage certificate must enter GRO after a move to Dublin
  • PPSN papers toward Revenue – not Stamp 4 alone
  • Recognition of a Swedish degree via QQI or NARIC Ireland
  • A home purchase – extracts for a solicitor toward Tailte Éireann in Cork
  • Company papers for CRO in Dublin
  • Power of attorney for an agent before an Irish solicitor

How a Swedish original reaches Ireland

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Find out who the recipient is

GRO, Revenue, QQI, Tailte Éireann or CRO sends a checklist. Ask us if you are unsure what is required.

  2. 2 Order the right Swedish original

Skatteverket, a court or a school issues the document. Copies rarely suffice for QQI or a purchase toward a solicitor.

  3. 3 Translate into English if needed

GRO and most QQI files want authorized English. The same Kammarkollegiet pair as for the USA. An EU multilingual civil-status form can suffice for some GRO files.

  4. 4 Notarise a power of attorney before apostille

If a solicitor in Dublin or Cork is to act for you, the power of attorney must be attested by Notarius Publicus in Sweden first.

  5. 5 Apostille and tracked return

Notarius Publicus adds the apostille. You get the original (and the translation) back, ready for filing in Ireland.

Important

Apostille for Ireland

Why English is usually needed

GRO and QQI rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized English from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, the same pair as for the USA. From SEK 1,495 for a standard document. Translation plus apostille from SEK 1,895. An EU multilingual civil-status form can suffice for some GRO files.

Timeline for GRO, Revenue or QQI

Apostille usually takes a few business days. Add time for English and any notarisation. The total depends on:

  • whether the power of attorney must be notarised first
  • whether authorized English must run in parallel
  • processing at Notarius Publicus
  • the QQI or NARIC queue toward degree comparison
Embassy of Ireland vs apostille

The embassy in Stockholm handles passports and consular work. Apostille for GRO, Revenue and QQI is done by Notarius Publicus in Sweden. Stamp 4 is residence.

  • Apostille for ordinary legalisation to Ireland
  • Notarisation of a power of attorney before apostille
  • Authorized English translation
  • Notarius Publicus for Swedish public documents

FAQ

Can the embassy in Stockholm apostille for me?
No. Ireland takes apostille via Notarius Publicus in Sweden. The embassy handles passports and consular work, not that stamp for GRO or Revenue. DFA apostilles Irish originals.
Is this the same English as for the USA or the United Kingdom?
Yes, it is the same Kammarkollegiet pair. Apostille for Ireland is a separate stamp.
Is Stamp 4 enough as a document stamp?
No. Stamp 4 and ISD are residence. GRO, Revenue and QQI want apostille on the document. Swedes in the EU do not need a visa for Ireland.
