Swedish marriage certificate

Apostille and translation of a Swedish vigselbevis

The officiant prints the vigselbevis. An office abroad wants to see that the wedding was real, and they need to read the paper. We add an authorised translation and place the apostille on the original, in one case.

The paper

The certificate from the wedding

A vigselbevis comes from the person who married you. A personbevis from Skatteverket shows what the population register says today. A screenshot, or a copy you print at home, is not a paper anyone can stamp.

Translation

A language the office can read

A translator authorised by Kammarkollegiet sets the text. A standard document starts at 1 495 kr. The language follows the country that will receive the paper.

Apostille

The stamp on the officiant original

A notary public places the apostille on the vigselbevis. The stamp says the document is genuine. It does not translate a line, and it does not say whether you are still married. Apostille starts at 1 595 kr.

Pay only for the steps they asked for

Some offices want the translation alone. Some want only the stamp. When they want both, the package is the short way through. A personbevis can sit in the same case.

Translation and apostille, together Best value

We take the original once. The translation and the apostille run side by side, and the papers come back ready to file.

Which paper to send

A vigselbevis comes from the person who married you, a priest or a civil officiant. It shows that the wedding took place, the date, and the names you had that day.

A personbevis from Skatteverket is a different paper. It shows what the population register says now: whether you are still married, and to whom. A divorce does not rewrite the old vigselbevis. The personbevis does.

The letter rarely says vigselbevis. Marriage certificate can mean the vigselbevis, the personbevis, or both. Send the letter, and we will say which papers it actually names.

If someone changed their name after the wedding, the vigselbevis keeps the name from that day. The personbevis shows the name as it is now.

Send the paper original. The apostille sits on the officiant certificate, not on the translation. A PDF you print at home is a copy, and the copy is the wrong paper. If you have lost the original, the officiant can sometimes print a new one. Skatteverket does not reprint a vigselbevis. They print a personbevis.

How the case runs

1

Find the original

From the officiant. If their letter is vague, send it to us before you order the wrong paper.

2

Send us the original

We name the language, and we say whether that country takes an apostille or wants the embassy route.

3

Translation and stamp

The apostille lands on the Swedish original. The translation is done by a translator authorised by Kammarkollegiet. You get both back.

A notary, but rarely an extra notarisation

A vigselbevis from an authorised officiant is an official document, so the apostille goes straight onto the original. A copy, or a card that is not the certificate itself, is a different paper and may need a notary first. A private power of attorney is almost always notarised before the apostille. If your paper needs that step, we say so before anything starts.

How a personbevis is different

Where is the vigselbevis going?

The country decides whether the route is an apostille or a path through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the embassy. Choose the recipient and you land on the right package.

Thailand, China and the United Arab Emirates do not take an apostille on this certificate. The route goes through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and that country embassy. The package then starts at 3 495 kr.

Common questions

Is a personbevis the same as a vigselbevis?

No. The vigselbevis comes from the person who married you and shows that the wedding took place. The personbevis comes from Skatteverket and shows what the population register says today. Many offices want both.

Does the vigselbevis show that we are still married?

No. It shows the wedding. If you later divorced, the vigselbevis stays as it was written. Current marital status is on the personbevis.

Is a PDF or a photo of the certificate enough?

No, not when the office wants an apostille. The stamp goes on the original from the officiant. A printout is a copy.

Must the certificate be notarised before the apostille?

Usually not, when an authorised officiant issued the original. A notary public can apostille it directly. A copy may need a notary first. A private power of attorney is almost always notarised before the apostille.

What does translation and apostille cost?

Authorised translation starts at 1 495 kr. Apostille starts at 1 595 kr. The package with both starts at 2 395 kr. Countries without apostille, such as Thailand, China and the United Arab Emirates, go through the embassy. That package starts at 3 495 kr. A personbevis in the same case is its own document.

Can you translate a vigselbevis into English?

Yes. English is the usual language when the paper is going to the United States, the United Kingdom, or an office that asked for English. The translator is authorised by Kammarkollegiet. The country you choose below shows which language we put in the case.

Do I get the original back?

Yes. The apostille sits on the certificate, and the certificate comes back together with the translation.

Not sure they also want a personbevis?

Send the letter from the office. We will say whether the vigselbevis is enough, whether the personbevis has to come with it, and whether that country wants an apostille or the embassy, before you look for the wrong paper.
