Documents for Thailand

Swedish documents for Thailand

Thailand accepts Hague apostilles only from 28 February 2027. Until then amphoe offices, land offices and notaries in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai want Swedish originals via the MFA and the Thai Embassy in Stockholm. We set the chain from the recipient list, often with Thai translation.

Correct path

Before 2027: embassy chain. After: often apostille

Now: private documents are notarised first, then MFA and the Thai Embassy in Stockholm. Add authorized Thai when amphoe or the land office requires it. From 28 February 2027 apostille may replace the embassy step in many cases. We say which path applies for your date.

Overview

How it works for Thailand

Swedish personal records, marital status certificates, powers of attorney and company extracts are used widely in Thailand, but until 28 February 2027 an apostille is rarely enough. VIZA starts from what amphoe, a Thai notary, land office, school or counterpart in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Pattaya or elsewhere actually asks for. Then we run Notary Public when needed, legalisation at the Swedish MFA and filing at the Thai Embassy in Stockholm. When needed we add Kammarkollegiet approved Thai translation. Common cases are marriage to a Thai partner, condo purchase via an agent, long stay residency and company relationships.

When needed

When do Swedish papers get stuck in Thailand without legalisation?

The requirement comes from the recipient in Thailand. These are the situations we see most before apostille starts in 2027:

  • Amphoe requires a legalised personal record and marital status certificate before marriage to a Thai partner
  • A broker or land office wants a legalised power of attorney before condo purchase or transfer
  • A school or employer in Bangkok asks for legalised grades or a criminal record certificate
  • A Thai notary will not accept a Swedish power of attorney without MFA and embassy stamps
  • A Swedish company must show registry extracts or agreements for a local partner or BOI related matter
  • A bank or agent in Phuket or Chiang Mai requires legalised civil documents

From a Swedish document to an accepted Thailand chain

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Read the requirement from Thailand

We start from the amphoe list, broker checklist or school email. That decides whether Thai, English, notarisation or only MFA plus embassy is needed.

  2. 2 Certify private documents

Powers of attorney, consents and company minutes often go via Notary Public first. Public Swedish extracts can sometimes skip that step.

  3. 3 MFA legalisation in Sweden

The Swedish MFA confirms signature and stamp. That is required before the Thai Embassy in Stockholm will accept the case.

  4. 4 Thai Embassy in Stockholm

We file according to embassy consular routines. Embassy fees are specified before filing.

  5. 5 Return to you

You get the papers back with tracked post. If the recipient then needs local translation or filing in Thailand, we help you see what is already done in Sweden.

Important

Apostille for Thailand: only from 28 February 2027

Thailand has decided to join the Hague Convention with entry into force on 28 February 2027. Until then an apostille does not replace MFA plus the Thai Embassy. Amphoe offices, land offices and notaries in Bangkok often stop apostille stamped originals today. We run the embassy chain now and can switch to apostille after that date for cases where it is enough. Embassy legalisation for Thailand starts from SEK 2,495 in Basic.

What typical Thailand cases look like with us

  • Personal record or civil status certificate
  • Certified passport copy
  • Bank papers when the lender requires them
  • Thai translation of the power of attorney

Translation, timing and embassy

Thai or English?

Amphoe offices and many local authorities want Thai. International schools and some companies accept English. The embassy in Stockholm does not always require translation to stamp, but the recipient in Thailand still might. We translate Swedish to Thai with a Kammarkollegiet approved translator from SEK 1,495 and can sync it with the embassy chain. Translation plus legalisation package from SEK 3,495.

Timeline before marriage, purchase or filing in Thailand

Our part in Sweden (certification, MFA, embassy) usually takes 8 to 15 business days in Basic. Book amphoe or notary time in Thailand only once the chain is planned. The total is affected by:

  • whether the power of attorney or consent must be notarised first
  • MFA queue in Stockholm
  • embassy consular processing
  • whether Thai translation should run in parallel
  • post for originals and return
  • public holidays in Sweden or Thailand
What the Thai Embassy in Stockholm actually does

The Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm legalises Swedish documents that have already gone through MFA and will be used in Thailand. We prepare the package, file according to consular routines and return stamped originals. After 28 February 2027 many cases may instead go via apostille. We say which path applies for your date.

  • Check against embassy filing requirements
  • Notary Public when the document is private
  • MFA legalisation before the embassy
  • Filing and follow-up at the Thai Embassy
  • Translation to Thai or English when needed
  • Tracked return to you in Sweden
