Documents for United Kingdom

Document services for the United Kingdom

The UK is in the Hague Convention. Swedish public documents get an apostille in Sweden, not at the British Embassy in Stockholm. ETA is the visa product. This page is papers for the Home Office, universities and companies.

Correct path

The right path for the United Kingdom

Apostille via Notarius Publicus is enough for Swedish public documents. An FCDO apostille is for UK-issued originals, not Swedish ones. The embassy in Stockholm does not stamp that chain.

Overview

How it works for United Kingdom

The Home Office, a UK university or a solicitor wants authenticity on the Swedish original. Apostille is done by Notarius Publicus in Sweden, not by FCDO and not by the embassy. That chain is separate from ETA. The checklist decides: a partner case, a school in London or Edinburgh, Companies House or a Scottish notary. Authorized English is added when Swedish is not enough.

When needed

When do UK recipients want an apostille?

The request comes from the Home Office, a university, solicitor, bank or Companies House. Typical cases:

  • A partner or family case that must prove civil status or marriage
  • University admission that asks for apostilled transcripts
  • Employment or background checks that want a Swedish criminal-record extract
  • A London solicitor or bank that wants a Bolagsverket extract
  • Property, probate or a power of attorney for England, Scotland or Wales
  • A name change or marital status to be recorded with a UK authority

From a Swedish document to an accepted chain for United Kingdom

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Read the United Kingdom requirement

We start from the recipient checklist. That decides language, notarisation and apostille.

  2. 2 Translate into English when required

Many recipients in United Kingdom want authorized English. Even in English-speaking countries the original Swedish text often still needs a certified translation.

  3. 3 Notarise private powers of attorney

Powers of attorney are attested by Notarius Publicus before apostille. Public extracts can often be apostilled directly.

  4. 4 Apostille via Notarius Publicus

United Kingdom is in the Hague Convention. Apostille replaces MFA and embassy stamps for Swedish public documents.

  5. 5 Return to you

You get the documents by tracked post, ready for the recipient in United Kingdom.

Important

Swedish apostille for the UK, not FCDO

The UK is in the Hague Convention. Apostille via Notarius Publicus is the path for Swedish public documents. FCDO and the embassy in Stockholm are not that step. Apostille for the UK starts from SEK 850 in Basic.

Why English is usually needed for the UK

UK agencies, universities and solicitors rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized English from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, even when apostille already covers legalisation. From SEK 1,495. Translation plus apostille from SEK 1,895. The same language pair is also used for the USA.

Timeline for the Home Office, school or solicitor

Apostille usually takes a few business days in Basic once originals are in. Add time for English translation and any notarisation. The total depends on:

  • whether a power of attorney must be notarised first
  • whether authorized English must finish in parallel
  • Notarius Publicus capacity
  • how many documents sit in the same Home Office or school file
British Embassy vs apostille

The embassy in Stockholm handles visas, ETA questions and consular work. It does not apostille Swedish personal extracts. For documents to be used in the UK, Notarius Publicus is the right office.

  • Apostille for Swedish public documents
  • Notarisation of powers of attorney for a solicitor
  • Authorized English translation
  • No MFA or embassy chain for ordinary legalisation to the UK

FAQ

Is apostille enough for the UK, or must the embassy stamp?
For Swedish public documents, apostille is enough. The British Embassy in Stockholm does not do that legalisation. ETA and visas are a different product.
Should I get an FCDO apostille in London instead?
FCDO apostilles documents issued in the United Kingdom. A Swedish personal extract is apostilled in Sweden by Notarius Publicus.
Must the document be translated into English?
The Home Office and most UK recipients want English. We use a Kammarkollegiet-authorized translator and can sync it with the apostille.
