Documents for USA

Document services for the USA

The USA is in the Hague Convention. Swedish public documents get an apostille in Sweden, not at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm. We add authorized English translation when USCIS, a school or an employer asks for it.

Correct path

The right path for the USA

Apostille via Notarius Publicus is enough for Swedish public documents. The U.S. Embassy in Stockholm does not stamp that chain.

Overview

How it works for USA

USCIS, a university or a U.S. employer wants proof the Swedish original is genuine. Apostille is issued by Notarius Publicus in Sweden, not by a U.S. Secretary of State and not by the embassy on Kungsgatan. The form decides the rest: I-130, school, bank or a New York notary. When Swedish will not be accepted we translate with Kammarkollegiet-authorized English.

When needed

When do U.S. recipients want an apostille?

The request comes from USCIS, a university, employer, bank or state agency. Typical cases:

  • A USCIS family case that must prove civil status or kinship
  • College admission that asks for apostilled transcripts
  • Employment that wants a Swedish criminal-record extract with apostille
  • A U.S. company or bank that wants a Bolagsverket extract
  • Property, probate or a power of attorney a U.S. notary must rely on
  • A name change or marital status to be recorded in a state

From a Swedish document to an accepted chain for USA

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 Read the USA requirement

We start from the recipient checklist. That decides language, notarisation and apostille.

  2. 2 Translate into English when required

Many recipients in USA want authorized English. Even in English-speaking countries the original Swedish text often still needs a certified translation.

  3. 3 Notarise private powers of attorney

Powers of attorney are attested by Notarius Publicus before apostille. Public extracts can often be apostilled directly.

  4. 4 Apostille via Notarius Publicus

USA is in the Hague Convention. Apostille replaces MFA and embassy stamps for Swedish public documents.

  5. 5 Return to you

You get the documents by tracked post, ready for the recipient in USA.

Important

Apostille for the USA, not embassy legalisation

The USA is in the Hague Convention. Apostille via Notarius Publicus is the path for Swedish public documents. The embassy in Stockholm is not that step. Apostille for the USA starts from SEK 850 in Basic.

Translation, timing and embassy

Why English is usually needed

U.S. agencies and schools rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized English from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, even when apostille already covers legalisation. From SEK 1,495. Translation plus apostille from SEK 1,895.

Timeline for USCIS, school or employer

Apostille usually takes a few business days in Basic once originals are in. Add time for English translation and any notarisation. The total depends on:

  • whether a power of attorney must be notarised first
  • whether authorized English must finish in parallel
  • Notarius Publicus capacity
  • how many documents sit in the same USCIS or school file
U.S. Embassy vs apostille

The embassy in Stockholm handles visas and consular work. It does not apostille Swedish personal extracts. For documents to be used in the USA, Notarius Publicus is the right office.

  • Apostille for Swedish public documents
  • Notarisation of powers of attorney
  • Authorized English translation
  • No MFA or embassy chain for ordinary legalisation to the USA

FAQ

Is apostille enough for the USA, or must the embassy stamp?
For Swedish public documents, apostille is enough. The U.S. Embassy in Stockholm does not do that legalisation. ESTA and visas are a different product.
Must the document be translated into English?
USCIS and most U.S. recipients want English. We use a Kammarkollegiet-authorized translator and can sync it with the apostille.
Is this the same apostille as a U.S. state apostille?
No. Here a Swedish original is apostilled in Sweden. A document issued in the USA is apostilled there, not by us.
