Documents for Vietnam

Document services for Vietnam

Until 10 September 2026 apostille is not enough against UBND. The chain runs via MFA and Vietnam’s embassy at Örby Slottsväg 26 in Älvsjö. From 11 September 2026 Sweden uses apostille under the Hague Convention. We add authorized Vietnamese when phòng tư pháp requires it. Legalisation is not an e-visa.

Overview

How it works for Vietnam

UBND and phòng tư pháp in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Đà Nẵng require legalisation that proves authenticity. Vietnam acceded to the Hague Convention with entry into force on 11 September 2026. Until then apostille is not enough: the chain is MFA and Vietnam’s embassy in Älvsjö. From 11 September 2026 Notarius Publicus apostilles Swedish public documents. Bộ Ngoại giao in Vietnam apostilles Vietnamese originals, not Swedish ones. When the form requires Vietnamese we run authorized translation in parallel. Legalisation is not a 90-day e-visa.

When needed

When do Vietnamese recipients want legalisation?

The request comes from UBND, phòng tư pháp, a university, a bank or an employer. Typical cases:

  • Hộ tịch and kinship at UBND in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City
  • A diploma for a school that reads Vietnamese
  • A power of attorney for an agent against phòng tư pháp or property
  • A company extract for a counterparty in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Đà Nẵng
  • A name change against the hộ tịch register
  • A bank or probate file where apostille is not yet accepted

  2. 2 Vietnamese when phòng tư pháp requires it

UBND rarely takes unprocessed Swedish. Authorized Vietnamese runs in parallel with legalisation.

  3. 3 A power of attorney for an agent is notarised first

An agent in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City wants an attested power of attorney before MFA. Notarius Publicus first.

  4. 4 MFA and Vietnam’s embassy in Älvsjö

Until 11 September 2026 the embassy stamps the chain MFA has already started. After that the step is replaced by apostille.

  5. 5 Return, ready for Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or Đà Nẵng

You get the documents by tracked post, ready for UBND, a school or a bank on the ground.

Important

Embassy until 11 September 2026, then apostille

Vietnam enters the Hague Convention on 11 September 2026. Until then apostille does not replace MFA and the embassy in Älvsjö. Legalisation for Vietnam starts from SEK 2,495 in Basic. The embassy’s own tariff may be added. From 11 September 2026 we switch to apostille via Notarius Publicus (SEK 850) for Swedish public documents.

Translation, timing and embassy

Why Vietnamese is usually needed

UBND and phòng tư pháp rarely accept unprocessed Swedish. Authorized Vietnamese from a Kammarkollegiet translator is its own step, even when legalisation already covers authenticity. From SEK 1,495. Translation plus embassy legalisation from SEK 3,495.

Timeline for UBND, a school or a bank

The embassy chain often takes several weeks. After 11 September 2026 apostille is faster. Add time for Vietnamese translation and any notarisation. The total depends on:

  • whether a power of attorney must be notarised first
  • whether authorized Vietnamese must finish in parallel
  • processing at MFA and Vietnam’s embassy in Älvsjö
  • whether the case starts before or after 11 September 2026
Vietnam’s embassy in Älvsjö vs apostille

The embassy at Örby Slottsväg 26 in Älvsjö stamps the MFA chain until 11 September 2026. It does not issue apostille. From that date Notarius Publicus is the right office for Swedish public documents. E-visas are handled on a different page.

FAQ

Is apostille enough for Vietnam today?
No, not before 11 September 2026. Until then the chain runs via MFA and Vietnam’s embassy in Älvsjö. From that date Swedish public documents take apostille via Notarius Publicus. Legalisation for Vietnam is not an e-visa.
Must the document be translated into Vietnamese?
UBND and phòng tư pháp usually want Vietnamese. English is rarely enough. We use a Kammarkollegiet-authorized translator and can sync it with legalisation.
Can you legalise a Vietnamese original in Sweden?
No. A document issued in Vietnam is legalised or apostilled there, often via Bộ Ngoại giao. Here a Swedish original is legalised for use in Vietnam.
