Correct path

CAC and FIRS take an embassy stamp

Nigeria is outside the Hague Convention. Swedish originals: notarisation when needed, MFA, then a stamp at the Embassy of Nigeria in Stockholm. A visa and TWP are a different queue from legalisation. English toward CAC, FIRS and NUC: authorized translation from Kammarkollegiet when the original is in Swedish. A power of attorney is attested in Sweden. Documents issued in Nigeria are authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

Overview

How it works for Nigeria

NIN, BVN, TIN and CAC’s RC number get mixed up in files toward Nigeria. NIMC issues NIN. The bank requires BVN. FIRS issues TIN. CAC issues the company’s RC number. Four queues, four forms. NUC compares a foreign degree. Land in Lagos or Port Harcourt often needs Governor’s consent under the Land Use Act, not just a purchase contract. English is official; Swedish originals still need authorized English when FIRS or CAC will not read Swedish. Swedish originals go via MFA and the Embassy of Nigeria in Stockholm. Documents issued in Nigeria are authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. TWP does not stamp the CAC file.

When needed

When do CAC or FIRS want an embassy stamp?

The request sits with CAC, FIRS, NUC or the state land office. Typical files:

  • CAC must issue an RC number against a Swedish company extract
  • FIRS must issue TIN against tax papers
  • NIMC must tie NIN to identity papers
  • NUC must compare a Swedish degree – not WAEC
  • Governor’s consent toward land in Lagos or Port Harcourt
  • A power of attorney so someone can sign in Abuja

Documents we often see toward NIN, CAC and FIRS

Typical documents by category. Collapse a box if you want less.

01 NIMC and NIN
  • Identity papers toward NIN
  • Birth or marriage extract toward Lagos or Abuja
  • BVN is the bank’s code, not NIN
02 NUC and universities
  • Diploma toward NUC, not WAEC
  • Transcript for UNILAG, ABU or the University of Ibadan
  • Grades that must be read in English
03 CAC, FIRS and land
  • RC number toward CAC
  • TIN toward FIRS
  • Governor’s consent toward land in Port Harcourt

An RC number, TIN or Governor’s consent

The usual chain from review to return. Collapse a step if you want less.

  1. 1 CAC, FIRS, NUC or Governor’s consent?

A company to CAC. TIN to FIRS. A degree to NUC. Land to the state. TWP does not take legalisation as a substitute for a visa.

  2. 2 Order the original in Sweden

A personal extract from Skatteverket, a company extract from Bolagsverket, a diploma from the university. CAC and FIRS rarely take a screenshot.

  3. 3 English when Swedish is not read

English is official. Swedish originals still need authorized English from Kammarkollegiet when FIRS or CAC will not take Swedish.

  4. 4 A power of attorney is attested in Sweden

If someone in Lagos is signing for you, Notarius Publicus attests the power of attorney here. A Nigerian notary does not stamp that Swedish instrument.

  5. 5 MFA here, federal MFA in Abuja there

MFA and the Embassy of Nigeria in Stockholm legalise Swedish papers. Nigerian originals are authenticated by the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. You send to CAC, FIRS or NUC.

Important

No apostille for Nigeria

Nigeria is not in the Hague Convention. Apostille via Notarius Publicus does not replace MFA and the Embassy of Nigeria. Legalisation starts from SEK 2,495 in Basic. The embassy’s own tariff may be added.

Typical Nigeria cases we see

Expand a case to see documents, route and timing.

An RC number at CAC in Abuja CAC sets the company number. An apostille is not enough. English if the extract is in Swedish. TWP shows an assignment, not the CAC file.

Typical documents

  • Company extract
  • Power of attorney
  • English if needed

English if needed → MFA → embassy

Often three to five weeks with translation

A degree toward NUC, not WAEC NUC maps against Nigerian higher-education level. WAEC is secondary school. Original plus English. A visa is a different file.

Typical documents

  • Diploma
  • Transcript
  • English

English if needed → MFA → embassy

Often three to six weeks with translation

Governor’s consent toward land in Lagos The Land Use Act needs the state’s consent. An attested power of attorney in Sweden before MFA.

Typical documents

  • Power of attorney
  • Company extract if needed
  • English if needed

Notarisation → MFA → embassy (+ English if needed)

Often three to five weeks

TIN at FIRS and NIN at NIMC FIRS issues TIN. NIMC issues NIN. BVN is the bank’s. Three codes, none of them is TWP.

Typical documents

  • Extracts
  • Power of attorney
  • English

English if needed → MFA → embassy

Often several weeks plus translation

Translation, timing and embassy

English toward CAC – official language is not enough on its own

CAC and FIRS rarely take unprocessed Swedish. Authorized English from Kammarkollegiet from SEK 1,495. Translation plus legalisation from SEK 3,495. Official English does not remove translation of the Swedish original.

Time toward CAC, FIRS and NUC

The embassy chain usually takes several weeks. An NUC comparison takes longer than the stamp. Also allow for:

  • a power of attorney that must be attested before an agent in Lagos acts
  • English here when the original is in Swedish
  • the NUC queue toward degree comparison
  • processing at MFA and the embassy
The embassy stamps the CAC file – not TWP

The Embassy of Nigeria legalises documents. A visa and TWP are a different queue. Apostille does not replace the chain toward CAC and FIRS.

  • Legalisation on Swedish originals for Nigeria
  • Attestation of a power of attorney before MFA
  • Authorized English toward CAC and FIRS
  • MFA and embassy – not apostille – for Swedish papers

FAQ

Is apostille enough for Nigeria?
No. Nigeria is outside the Hague Convention. CAC, FIRS and NUC want MFA plus the Embassy of Nigeria in Stockholm.
Do I need a translation when English is official in Nigeria?
Official language does not remove the requirement. FIRS and CAC rarely read unprocessed Swedish. Authorized English from Kammarkollegiet plus legalisation is the usual chain.
Is TWP or a visa enough instead of legalisation?
No. TWP and a visa are entry. CAC, FIRS and NUC want the embassy chain on the document.
